my land rover has finally broken down ... clutch

On my way back home and lost my clutch,
Just waiting for recovery now,
it looks like its the joint from the flexi to the hard clutch pipe has leaked all my fluid,,
its an utter pain to get to the slave cylinder on a conversion as the exhaust needs removing, can the system be bled any other way? (If its just come loose that is, otherwise it needs to come off anyway)

i put a new slave and master on, shouldve changed the pipe too!

Why are you being recovered just drive it ? it's only the clutch. Its a landrover !
I drove round for a full week in my mini with no clutch going to college 30 mls, before I had chance to get the bits and fix it. I even went to get the bits to fix it, in it. Well at the time I was 17 and only had one car so it had to be done
I didnt usually use the clutch on my disco once moving, anyway to save the fork.

I did the same Norm on a Morris Minor, the rods on the clutch operating system wore through & broke, carried on driving it until the weekend & was able to fix it. Always parked it on a slope, rolled away & them dropped it into gear. There was a lot less traffic then though, if you stopped in traffic, stop engine, into first gear & pull the starter, lurch, lurch, fire & you're off. Good job it started easily, you wouldn't do that with a 1960's Anglia.

Owas, I don't know the layout you've got, but generally you can bleed out through a union if you have to, done it when you can't shift a bleed nipple or its broken off. On some vehicles you can push the slave cylinder right back & force the air back up into the master cylinder & out, or a mixture of both methods.

Hehe I went on a recovery and picked a guy and his wife with their clutch gone and the clutch pipe went on my iveco, I said nothing and drove 100 mls to his house, I off loaded the car and then I told him what had happened, he said I feel stupid now !!

never done it before so it was a little worrying!

but it looks like the flexi is ok, its the hard line thats leaking, so replace the hardline and bleed through a union and i should be ok?
i really dont want to have to remove the downpipe,anyone with a conversion sitting in the N/A probably knows what i mean

Had the clutch go on the Peugeot van once on the A1 Archway! If you don't know it it's a very busy junction in North London.
Lurched it on the starter to fire it up and drove to the nearest cafe to wait for recovery.

Yep in one I my previouse jobs I was instituted to take a 7.5 tonne fridge van to some moterway services around Manchester tranship the load across from one of the driver's who had a clutch problem and the fetch his back to north of Preston when I got there I found the clutch would not disegage rang the then boss who said he wanted me to dry bringing it home so I did doddle of a job really

The clutch rod broke on my Riley, got to a garage and borrowed his vice to make a new one, luckily I just happened to have some rod of the right size, a hacksaw and a split die in the boot of the car.

Drove my 1952 Sunbeam S8 500 cc twin complete with pillion passenger from Skye to The Kyle of Tongue (notch in the north coast of Scotland) via Cape Wrath in pouring rain with a collapsed clutch release bearing.

Took the Engine & Gearbox out at the Tongue youth hostel and replaced the bearing (posted from London) - it slides in from outside but the frame obscures it .

Mind you, that was in 1967

Clutch slave has just gone on the 90 that gets used around the farm, twas £7.50 fix . Got looking at the old girl , still runs really well so think I might chuck a few quid at it and put it back on the road.

parts fairly cheap and i can acces the joint from hard pipe to flexy from the top,
changing the whole pipe means getting access to the slave cylinder.

Is the issue because it’s a conversion? Took a look at the slave on my TD5 and it looked easy enough to access (relatively speaking)

yep, the downpipe from the 300tdi blocks it off so you cant get to it without removing it and i barely have any space to get to the nuts to take it off , itll most likely be a wing off job if it needs to come off now.

finally got round to replacing the pipe today,
cracked off the union while using the eezibleed and it bled up straight away,
