That's a thought. If I was going to mastermind a crack gang of dog thieves in 2015, I wouldn't be going up people's drives (where I might get recorded on CCTV) and stick a tiny chalk mark on the house.
I'd jot down the numbers on my throwaway pay-as-you-go mobile and then send a text to my minions later on in the day "A Street, #23, 37 & 44. B Street, #19".

Chalk seems rather error-prone, especially if the bad guys mistake genuine bird poo for a chalk mark and break into the wrong house!

That's exactly what I thought when I first heard about night, I hope your right.

What a load of cobblers! Why would anyone go onto someones property, further risking getting caught, to then mark up with chalk (which could be rubbed off or washed away) for other "members" of their "gang" to come along later? Is there any coincidence that there seems to be more and more of these BS scare stories circulated since the rise of social media?

As said above, almost everyone has a smartphone these days, if they were that savvy they would be sending each other messages or pictures, or possibly even phoning each other.

thinking about this whole thing of nicking some ones dog, (based on people i know with dogs, plus my own i`ve had) why would a thief take the high risk of taking a dog he does`nt know with a high chance of being caught either by the owner or a neighbour because the dog starts barking and making so much noise, he/she could end up with more holes in them than a colander through being bitten, plus add to this has to break into house in the first place and hope they don`t not get caught by a camera. if the dogs outside the chances of some one hearing it bark are greater than it being inside, the list can go on,
i would say there`s more chance of it being taken when took for a walk than thieving it from the house, surely one of the reasons for having a dog is the hope of it stopping thief`s coming into your property, there again thief`s are a thick bunch of idiots,

The marking of houses did exist, it was used by the Romany gypsies and was very common circa the 1960's region.

These were the true gypsies and not the travellers of today,

They used to visit selling charms, pegs and silks etc, the marks normally scratched close to the door or gate had various meanings usually related to the ease or difficulty of any sale and was intended for the next seller to come along, they were not used for theft or burglary.
