And for those interested in WW2 history, the barn in the background belongs to Mme Gobley, heroine of the resistance who was 96 a few weeks ago. Her husband Andre founded the Maquis Bayard, which at it’s height had 1,000 FFI resistance fighters in the woods a mile west of here. Andre was captured by the Germans, taken to a camp I believe in Poland, Where he escaped and walked back to the village.
In 1944 the SAS sent up a base in the Morvan forest, about 20 miles west of here, complete with jeeps; their story is told in a book ‘SAS, with the Maquis’, by Ian Wellstead, it’s a great book though out of print, well worth a read if you can find a copy.
