I did say that earlier you don't have to put basecoat on really wet, if your getting a run or peel in basecoat your laying it on too quick and too heavy.

That gun ideally for modern 2k hs or basecoat 29psi with the trigger pulled at the gun or 0.7 psi at the air cap. Produce perfect results

Can I add to this thread as I've just done my first top coat on a scrap panel.

I've also got orange peel, and am trying to sand it level with 800 and 1200 grit. I think I know what I did wrong, a combination of not enough thinners and either too high or too low pressure.

It's going to need another coat as the primer is starting to show in places after sanding, but my question is how perfect do I have to get the existing paint first. Do I aim to bottom out all the tiny pits, or can I just get a reasonably flat surface and worry about perfection in the last coat?

It's taking an age but I'm prepared to strip everything off and start again if necessary so long as I eventually discover the right way .

This is using cellulose.

You can use stopper/putty to fill the last few little nicks rather than keep rubbing back through the previous coat. Everyone has their own favourite method and favourite materials.

I`d be laying several coats of colour before i started sanding, for one it will make it easier to get a smooth surface without thinning it so much that the primer shows through and secondly sanding between every coat will add a lot of time and a real pain in the arm.
So i`d go
two coats of primer
high build primer/filler
guide coat
sand
3 or 4 coats of colour
sand
2 or 3 coats of clear
sand working up to 2000
polish with finer and finer polishes
Finished job

So I had my second go today, the basecoat was much better now it was thinned properly, but got lots of orange peel using my 1k clear. The clear is upol 1k and it says it's ready for use and not to thin so what are the options in this situation, is it possible to thin it slightly?

I sprayed the same way as I did the base, any thoughts?

gti pro 2bar as for your clear coat being orange peel,your clear coat can 5lit,needs to be kept in a room tempter control.if the can is kept in the cold the clear coat will be thick.Causing orange peel.Look on the can it will tell you what tempter to keep it.

You will be supprised on how little reducer some paints need when kept at the correct temp! As for instance the epoxy primer, it only needs a drop of thinner when at the right viscosity
