My first go at a wood burner

Removed the valve
Filled with warm water to displace the gas and then filled with warm water and bleach (Tesco pine fresh) works the best (was used on the gas plant i used to work on untill the HSE muppets put a stop to it)
Cylnder with valve removed, all gas removed and stench removed
Marking up the door for cutting
Hinges in place with duck tape
Hinges in process of being fitted
Hinges fitted (will be removed for cutting)
Top handle cut off using a grinder and 1.0mm cutting disk
Hinges re fitted after making first cut.
Finished cutting door and removed all sharp edges with a file.
Nuts fitted to back of door bolts theese were also tapped out to M6 so i could fit hinges before the door was open.
Top ready for marking out the 4" hole for the flue
The hany tool i made for marking out the hole its a pencil glued to the valve the tip of the pencil is 2" from the centre of the screw thread
i marked out the circomfrance of the hole and then witness marked it in preperation for cutting (a pencil line will just burn off and you will be lost

Ready to cut 4 holes put in to avoid having to burn through the thick threaded collar
All ready to cut (now where did i put that sparker)
Hole cut about 1/8" inside witness marks to alow fine tuning when i aquire a bit of pipe for the flue
Hole cut just need to find a pipe for the flue and make my baffle plates

I'd make some more substantial hinges if you are hoping to keep it any length of time.. The top hinge will not work if you use the lower cut line Also Mr Calor frowns on misuse of his cylinders even when the name is painted over (I don't mind what you do with them though so carry on)

Yeh im using the upper line, the seam weld got in the way of the hinge so added the extra line at the last min, got a bargin job lot of stainless fire door hinges, just having trouble remembering where i put them for safe keeping, the cylnder isnt a calor they dont do an 11kg prop

I usually cut through the bottle Plasma/cutting disc on the hinge side first, weld on the hinges then finally cut the rest of the door shape,

I dont have a plasma cutter mabey next year, only oxy prop, gona take the hinges off cut along hinge side with angle grinder and 0.8mm cutting disk refit hinges and then cut out rest of door, was looking at plasma part machines any experance of them ?

Mine is working well and I am very pleased with how it turned out.

Oh and don't forget to take it outside to burn the paint off, you don't want the fumes and smoke from the paint indoors. When I burned the paint off mine by lighting a fire inside it, the paint actually caught fire. Nasty stuff.

I get mine shot blasted after completion, Also I have had some that were a s*d to weld,because of the galvanised finish under the paint,

Shot blasting sounds like a good idea, might have to take it in to work and get it blasted, then a coat of high temp paint more pics to follow as so as i get a break in the weather to cut

Another advantage of shot blasting after completion,it gives a nice uniform finish to the high temp paint, Otherwise any grinding you have done on the bottle shows a different finish to the unground areas,

( joke every body I know it needs to be at least 1" !)

I made one the other day and used 3" exhaust pipe as a flue and a 1.1/2 bsp barrel nipple n gate valve to control it, but the air needs to go in just above the fire with a wood burner that worked fine, also I put some 20 x3 around door to lap the body n 'seal' it a little better coz they 'pull' like mad I used a cheap gate latch as the door catch so you can just 'slam it to'

yeh i need to fit a regulating valve and fit a latch, had trouble welding it because the cylner was galinised and only about 1/8" and the pipe had 3/8" thick walls

Make sure your first test fire is outside in fresh air and get a stick fire going to burn it up and get rid of galv n paint, as my missus says you will end up like Fizz off Corrie !!

yeh going to sand blast the full thing then give it a coat of high temp paint, might add a few short legs aswell
