morning all.

right me boats going in dry dock today.

the hull is 114 trs old, made of riveted iron, i have to have a hull survey done every 4yrs.

i "might" have to weld some patches on, in the past ive used a arc welder and used indifferent rods.

what i want to know is, can i weld steel patches to me iron hull with a mig and normal wire??

seem to think i can, but im not sure.

Can't help, but that reminds me... I was down at Portsmouth a few weeks back and they had HMS Daring in drydock (you know, the new Type 45 destroyer).
Apparently the current thinking is that instead of making the belt armour really thick to withstand torpedo hits, they make it really thin so the torpedoes pass clean through the boat without exploding!
Someone should have told that to the tug skipper who shoved the bow of his boat through the side of the destroyer...
Apparently when the Daring was taken out of drydock and tied up at a jetty for the recent Navy days, they moored it so the damage was on the side the public couldn't see
I heard it was repaired with concrete as a temporary fix. Let's hope it's a better repair than the one on Ark Royal, where a hull plate was so badly fixed it peeled back, forcing water into the bilges and dropping the Ark's top speed to 4 knots
Oh, and did you hear about the Endurance...?

Well the dockyard story varies a bit from the BBC version, in that the boat WAS run aground to save it, with the guy who gave the order receiving a commendation!
Endurance had recently had a 20 million pound refit before the incident... and now needs a 30 million pound refit to repair the flood damage
Apparently, the Navy doesn't even own the boat; it's leased...

the british navy used to be awesome, our national anthem makes reference to brittania rules the waves. maybe it should be brittania leased the waves. P.s. one hopes that the thin steel idea was british. for if it was foriegn, what thier agenda hey. and if it was british.................................what the #$%^.

seems odd when modern anti-ship torps seem to be proximity detonated or wake following...then again with proximity det I dont suppose hull thickness matters that much...

on the plus side, cheaper to build & faster....???

I remember when the RN was the envy of the world.(& came very close to signing up)... now its like.."oh, do you still have one?"
