The early 944 needs bare metal as the paint is awful, if i look carefully I am sure I can see brushstrokes!! I think someone really has painted it with a brush.
It needs work on the interior as well, someone has made a bad job of putting S2 wings on it so I will remove and repair the ones off the other car and fit them. I don't see the point in just doing a quick job to get it back on the road as I will need to keep repairing it then, it is best to do it properly at first and then just maintain me thinks.
I have a bit of leave shortly so i will start putting pictures up as I go along.
I told my mate I'd buy his little saxo vtr instead of him scrapping it, so could do with making space for that in the unit too. Unless I just clean it up and sell it straight on. I wanted it for messing about on track.
The missus won't be too happy when I mention that little purchase!
Hi Mate...also like those old BMWs...brave project but it can be done. Agree with the advice here (of course)...have been through a similar process with my MR2. I was totally new to MIG welding / fabrication work etc. Best thing to do is to plan everything carefully...agree compressor is a good way to go but to be honest it can be quite a big outlay initially - all of my work was done without one but am just starting to build up air tools now..problem is you need quite a few bits to get started. My advice would be to spend good money on a descent MIG...you can make do with cheaper metal working tools...they won't be as nice to use but will get the job done. With a cheap MIG it will be difficult as you'll be trying to learn MIG welding as well as trying to get progress on your project. Hopefully you can find repair panels for the BMW...for the MR2 I had to make repair panels which was a pain. Also - if you have to make patches up I found it best to do this first...then to do the cutting on the car....once you've cut bits off it can be difficult to work out how things go back together....especially if the bits you cut off get bent or fall apart as mine did. Good luck with the project and keep posting pictures
Happy Good Friday everyone
I popped down the car today. Didn't get much done as I was on my own for the most part, but I got some pictures nonetheless.
And you'll have to excuse the welding. It's my first time!
I nominate the peacock for the nosiest bird award!! I reckon one of em must have arc eye, he was standing so close!!
Cut the rear panel off to access the boot floor. Panel was rotten anyway
Cut a little section out to replace
I'll sort this side out on Sunday
Welded in a new piece.
This little **Language**er was practically on my lap whilst welding!
Now there's some nooks and crannies I need to get to. I'm struggling to get into panel joins to clean with a knot wheel on a grinder. Any opinions on what to buy to get in the corners etc?
I'm talking areas like these
And tucked away again (pain in the **** getting it in and out!)
I know it's not much, but thanks for looking anyway.
