I'd also love to know about the poll ....
Who are the two people that voted lost cause on a welding forum ?
Care to own up ?
Not guilty, M'lud.

Nor me, I plead insanity though. Not guilty, M'lud.
Happy to do that, i was referring to the body case of the welder is pretty rusty too, needs a clean upListen to people who know better mate !
BIN that spool of wire instantly!
Yeah, that wire is going to hold you back from achieving good results, though it does look like you are improving quite a bit!
I do see areas where impurities, probably that rust, are causing the welds to look like porous lava...you can see them, right?
Brush off the welds with a wire brush to get a better idea of what is going on...make everything clean again. It also wont look as "bad"....
Oh, last thing, REDO the wiring on your earth clamp. clean it like mad, then maybe cut the cable back to clean copper and figure out a better way to bolt it on. I would get a terminal fitting big enough to solder or crimp in place. a bad earth can really mess with you!
you welding is definitely improving...keep at it!

That still looks 'rather light' on shielding gas to me.
Try 0.6 wire / 5 Kg roll?
It's easier on the feed drive and a sufficient quantity for your learning and the job.
A 15 Kg roll has a lower unit cost, if it doesn't rust.
Funny you saying that, I was on holiday in Brittany last year and went to a scrapyard (because that's what you do on holiday, right?) and some of the cars in the scrappy would've been good for another 10-20 years here! I saw next to none of them with any sort of meaningful rust, though I did see a Citroen AX on 383,000km. Pretty impressive!I've a 25 year old clio, in the garden with no rust... Wife's run around...
If you get really stuck come to france, but one for the shell, and transplant.
20 years ago we came over with a British one, took it for an mot, the tester has never seen rust like it.
I bought ours 5 years ago 1996 model? 400 euros, it's mint.
as others have said, don't persist with that manky wire unless you unspool loads of it and its PRISTINE some layers down.
...that said, for all a 5kg wire spool would set you back, why hamper yourself. New spool of wire and its about 20 quid spent that wont be wasted and it comes with the bonus of you not having another possible cause of poor welding that's just holding you back.
Also, sort that manky earth lead lol. With that and the wire youre ******* into the wind! Definite signs of improvement though
Thank you, ill have a go at the wire tomorrow hopefully but yeah I'm tempted to buy a whole new one as others have said but I'll need to change the liner too.
More progress today chaps, tried again with advice given and to start had same problem whilst adjusting the settings, but once I realised I was just going to fast! Slowed down on other side of metal for much better results not perfect but I had used the clean metal mostly and also haven't serviced the welder yet.
What do you think? Also I noticed it's quite charred and black, is this too much gas or not enough or anything else?
Also I have posted a pic of the wire I inherited with it, seems a bit mucky, cant tell of this is that or not, seems to just brush off.

Yeah i did turn the flow down considerably just to test different settings, so i can ramp it back up again now i now whats at fault. And ok get you on the 0.6, why is that better out of interest?
A check list for you ..
1 , SORT that earth clamp out !
2 , NEW spool of 0.6 wire , when you order that , remember to order some 0.6 tips to suit your torch !
3 , Either , blow the liner through with an airline , or change it for complete piece of mind .
4 , set the flow regulator to 12 ltrs a min , and LEAVE IT ALONE !
.....
Tick each one off and we have a baseline !
first word Reno should tell u everything........bit late now......
should have done what Barking Mat said go for a used shell.......
but why bother it's worthless.......even if it were ur grannies........
u'd be better rebuilding a Morris 1000 than the Reno I'm afraid.....
BUT
it'sa learning experience....
good luck
Morris 1000 or one of the best handling/most fun hot hatches ever made.
It wouldnt be a morris 1000 for me.
