buy a spotweld drill bit and drill all the spots out, cut out where it joins the pillars and hammer and chisel to remove.
refit new panel. weld. jobs a goodun.
The spot welds will look like little indentations every few inches, they are hard so you need a spot weld drill to get them out. Once you start you'll see what needs doing, the new sill will also give you clues. Cut as little out as you need to get back to bright clean metal as trying to weld rust is a losers game!
I know as I had to keep my missus air cooled Beetle on the road for a few years, young love and stupidity......
Also, get a gas blowlamp and scraper to remove the underseal, cos you won't weld anywhere near it without it catching fire, melting, contaminating the repair. And a bucket of water and a sponge.
The water is for throwing over the car when it catches fire, the sponge is to use, with cold water, on the scald you get when some of that melted sealer you missed drips on your arm!
As for the easy bit - joining new to old - google it, loads of ways to do it - butt weld, lap joint, hole filling spot welds, you will likely use all of them.
Cover the glass inside and out with film - it will pis you off no end if you get rust spots on the inside of the windscreen from grinding and welding.
Crack on mate!
That's not welding. On a side note I was practicing with my mig (clarke turbo weld 185T) after a while not using and thit was spitting a lot of metal at me, not sure if the wire was coming out to quick or I was to far View attachment 225088 View attachment 225088 away or too close but this was the result any advice?
That's not welding.
Practice on clean steel (grind the scale off it), get some clean sheet, search this forum, then show the results - before starting on your car - you have some learning to do, but if I can do it anyone can.
Oh wow I didn’t even realise it was this easy to buy the whole thing new, I see what you mean now. How hard would this realistically be for me to cut and fit? I have a decent angle grinder with plenty of metal cutting discs that I used yesterday to cut 2mm thick steel so this should be ok? But is it obvious where to cut and join?
Shouldn't be, but I may not have had the right pressureAre you out of gas?
Thank you Patrick that's great advice I appreciate it.pull the trigger, you can hear the gas hiss, or not, looks like no gas to me, I would take a good look at the rust in the sills and only cut as far up as you need to, pattern sills rarely fit as the originals did and are often thinner although that would be hard with a Renault ! come up say 1" past any known rust, cut a line and reassess, cut he repair panel say 1/4" taller and joggle the edge for it to go behind rather than trying to do a but on waffffer thin steel, take a look at mustie1 on ebay, he is no professional welder but has been welding up a rusty orange pickup recently, some good tips there, don't look at binky on youtube as that will put you off for life, well do look at it but not for inspiration, it has taken them 5-6 years so far!
