Mx5 power steering cooler copper

This is the cooler for the powersteering fluid, a simple tube.
It got a repair, is rusty and is now leaking.

I am now thinking to make a new one from anealed copper and maybe turn two brass hosepilars to solder on both ends.
Good idea or not? Would it need more support brackets? Suggestions welcome.

I'd just make the new one out of copper and jubilee clip the pipe on the ends - it's no the return so there's no real pressure there


or.... stainless might be better, copper is a bit soft, it might well flex too much as you drive, work harden and then crack/snap?

Cupronickel would probably be a better option than copper - I've made one out of that before. Bending it will be the challenge, but less so than stainless.

Does it actually need it?

Lancia suddenly fitted one to the integrale evo - having done several version before it without. I left if off on several years ago as the hose required to connect to it was stupid money as it was no longer available new.

The MX5 questionably needs a power steering cooler, especially under normal road driving conditions and with the UK weather . However any spirited driving such as drifting and the fluid may boil. The cooler I fitted had the bonus that it almost doubled the capacity of the system so it should never get hot.

Oh and it's getting a turbo in the next few weeks so why not

it's actually my sons car but I do all the work and drive it a fair bit.

Cupronickel would probably be a better option than copper - I've made one out of that before. Bending it will be the challenge, but less so than stainless.

I filled some 3/8" copper pipe with fine sand, using a tiny funnel, and wrapped it around a 2" tube to make a coil once, it worked quite well.

Remember to blow all the sand out with an airline before connecting it to anything though.

A cheap hand bender makes light work of Kunifer, well worth getting just to have in the magic box of kit I might need.

Couldn't get cunifer, but got enough copper two make two.
Next weekend I'll give it a try.
