sounds like you'd have been better employing him for "sales"
I was thinking he sounded salesman material too.

He'd only promise stuff that he couldn't deliver, like most BS merchants that talk their way into companies. World is full of them and then the work falls to others...
Level 2 NVQ apprentice welder, been there, seen it and done it. Totally and utterly useless at every task given, but was keen to weld, and talked long and often about the welding jobs he had done. A couple of my very experienced coded lads spent some time showing him the errors of his ways.
He was proud of this one, bless him.
He only lasted the week because i'm a soft touch. I've never met anyone so spectacularly bad at the most basic tasks bless him. It was like trying to educate pork so it was thanks but no thanks.
Set on as an apprentice fabricator, not specifically a welder.
At 18 he had the balls to walk into my office and hold his own to get a start including emailing me his CV there and then and making sure i had it in my hand. Impressive CV and sounded good.
Told him I would give him a weeks trial. Two days in my chief says 'nope'. Tried him at welding as a last ditch attempt to find some glimmer of skill before waving him off. CV obviously a cut and paste google job.
Perhaps holding his own is the only skill he has...![]()
I got one from a guy who said he had 10 years experience as a computer consultant and paid attention to detail. Some simple arithmetic showed he became a consultant when he was 12.

Ok so we’ve had our fun let’s know the real story behind it @Welderpaul
My guess is a “coded welder” who regularly “passes X-ray” tests has applied for a job and had a go at a simple weld test to prove his worth. Then gone to the pub and told his mates he passed it but turned the job down cos he can make £60k on the rigs working 6 months a year.
Just a wild guess mind. Not that I’ve seen it before![]()
Nothing!!and what is wrong with lefthanded welders who do regular x ray work ,work off shore and earn over 60 k
