Tight b###ersIt's interesting to know how welds actually work. I did a level 2 course in mma but it fairly basic and just covered how to start the arc, rod angle, travel speed then flat butt, fillet and v up then the instructor cut and etched them and told us we had passed although the company we were working for didnt want to pay for the certificate just the tuition so don't actually have any formal qualification really
You got it. The 10mm will suck that heat away so quick you'll end up dropping a very cold slug in there. This is also the reason we pre heat thick section so that is slows down the cooling rate to avoid cold cracking. Pre heat won't aid with fusion/penetration much mind.So if you set a mig to get full penetration on a bit of 2mm plate, and then move over to some 10mm plate you won't get the same penetration (2mm)
Is this due to the large mass of the 10mm drawing heat out of the weld puddle?
There you go. Never knew that. Half a dozen lemons in the tool box is the key then.Very interesting read.
Citric acid works for weld etching too.

Welding does have its own terminology and you were dead right to ask the question. It was my terminology that was incorrect. It's been Afew years since I did any welding under tuition So you guys are gonna be hot on it compared to my rusty knowings.I am just starting a level 2 MMA now, had the inductions last night on all the H&S stuff etc, will start with the course actually welding next Thursday.
MMA seems to be dying in what students wanted, on that course anyway. I was the only one out of 13 that wanted stick the others equal split MIG and TIG. I guess MIG because that is what most production is nowadays and TIG as people think it demands more money???
Now you know why I asked my question when you got on to MMA and Hot passes as I would like to get as much understanding as possible and like every other type of activity, welding has its own terminology.
