Just been watching Royal Navy Carribean patrol, chief engineer giving a few facts about engines. They have 2 small engines for "cruising" giving 65 yards per gallon, but when they bring the Rolls Royce engines online for serious speed it drops to 17 YARDS per gallon!

I wonder if the Captains got a fuel card?

Hello Robotstar,

"the Rolls Royce engines". which were actually Bristol engines. What I didn't know until I just checked is that it was developed, by Bristol, in the 1950s and powered the Vulcan bomber, TSR2 and of course, famously, in Concord.

Impressive fuel consumption, and very little tangible results, I mean that is a huge boat, how many staff, at what cost for a few suitcases of naughty stuff. I understand the problems of drugs, but at what cost??

heres the ship me daughters on . it has 2 -12000 hp crossley pielstic diesel engines 24000hp total . twin screws speed is 28 knotts full power . the engines are masive and the noise is deafening

Aha...the nukes eh! Read something the other month on those fellas...if they didn't need to come up for crew fatigue & replenishing food stocks they could keep going around the globe indefinately! The latest class of British sub can detect on Sonar - from Plymouth - a ship leaving New York harbour and tell what type of ship it is! etc.etc. Or is that classified?!
