Mower drive

Lost drive on my Einhell rwd mower,so found the belt was off the crank pulley,then I saw it’s still slack ,there is some play where the gearbox pivots on the axle,very little but if I lever it around it’s pivot ,it does tighten,manually turning the pulley on the gearbox,it does turn the o/s wheel,but I think it’s going to be too slack under load,then I noticed this expansion spring in fresh air disconnected,can’t see where it hooks on,any ideas? Thanks.

My mates father-in-law had a hyundai mower with similar issues, spring mounted from the chassis to rear drive gearbox on his, maybe its the same on yours?

Usually hooks onto the diff casing and the mower body to tension the belt, but not 100% without a better pic

On some mowers the drive system is engaged this way - when you pull the drive lever on the handles you pull a cable, the other end pulls on the gearbox housing, rotates it around the axle & tightens the belt giving you drive. Your no drive issues could be fixed by adjusting the cable, if not you likely need a new belt.

The spring is there to return the gearbox back to non drive mode.

I think the spring is unrelated,it’s orientation is the wrong direction to tension the gearbox which in turn would tension the belt,doing a manual test with someone underneath ,and me pushing the drive lever,gives drive to both wheels,even though when stationary,the belt is slack,though I’m still wondering why it slipped off the pulley in the first place?

I thought that yesterday, but it’s crap

With all the slack in the belt,it drove both wheels up a slope,anyway I wasn’t convinced it will stay on the pulley and with no visible location for the (random) spring,i welded a 3 mm spacer between the chassis and gearbox,which tensioned the belt sufficiently.

When you pull the drive lever what does the other end of the cable do?

Usually it either moves a lever that goes into the gearbox, in which case the belt should be tight all the time or the cable pulls the whole gearbox & tightens the pulley against the belt.

In that case there's usually a spring from the gearbox to the chassis to keep the belt tensioned.
