Moving an Eagle Surface Grinder

Well it’s home! Still stuck on n the trailer as I decided to move it in one piece, but laid down. I know it has two oilers on the head - as they ripped my T shirt on two when they caught as I was trying to guide the head down, but the engine crane dropped rather more quickly than I was expecting! Note to self - don’t try and stop 300kg of surface grinder dropping- I am not twenty years old anymore!

Magnetic chuck present and appears to work- but a bit rusty in places.

Might be a plain bearing head. Mine has grease cups too. I don't know how many different bearing arrangement there are but I know at least 3.

This one appears to have a spindle lock button on the head which my machine lacked, I had to make one.

The cross slide on these suffer from a lack of lubricztionbsonpay close attention to that. You need to get an oil gun up under the bellows and lubricate the ways from the outside which is not ideal. The bronze nut on top of the base has a little oil channel around the top too which you can fill with oil from a can to lubricate the screw.

Thanks. It’s still flat on its back in the trailer- it remains just as heavy today as it was last night!! It’s got a 2.1658 on the plate- but I don’t know if that’s actually a Mk 2 - it also has a reconditioned plate from 1984
Only advantage I can see of it being led down is motor access through the bottom. I need to convert to single phase or VFD. The motor data plate show 400/440v I wonder if that means I can’t try to dig out the extra winding mentioned often when it comes to motors ?

I'd try finding the star point and buying a cheap Chinese VFD before resorting to a single phase motor. It can be a bit daunting the first time you start picking apart the windings but I've done 3 or 4 now. 3 phase with cheap VFD (speed control) always strikes me as far superior to single phase

Well I still have a spare VFD best I start hunting for some clues

I am hopefully on the right path- I have found the 3 wire’s joint and have split them- now just have to figure out what terminal to connect each to…

What is a reasonable way to clean the motor- it is absolutely horrible right now.

Connection is simple.
3 original wires and 3 new.
Pick a new wire and connect it to an original. Pick another new wire and connect it to an original. Then, you've guessed it, connect the final new wire and the remaining original together. You now have the three points of your delta connection.

I changed mine from star to delta. It was not particularly challenging.

The main advantage (apart from the option of a more controlled speed increase at start-up) is that of changing the wheel speed, if using a smaller diameter item or to change the characteristics of a wheel by slowing it a bit.

I’ve never changed the wheel speed on mine.

Mine has the slightly higher power motor. 1 1/4 as opposed to 1HP indicated for most, I think.

I've never changed the speed on mine. But I do like the soft start up from the vfd.

I was using my eagle grinder today. They are a handy tool.

You can't do that if you label the original 3 wires, and only connect an original wire to one split from the Y.
