moving a lathe 1 mile in brum

Hello all my sons doing an engineering apprenapprenticeship and bought him self a lathe off ebay I was thinking boxford or myford something we could throw in the back of the van oh no hes gone and bought a progress high speed lathe.100 years weights about a ton been to see it today and its a nice bit of kit but a beast 2metres long to so my question is do any of you helpful bunch know someone in birmingham who has a wagon with a hiab who can pick this up and move it a mile down the road west brom to scott arms down the newton road.

Dodgy trailer, although this was apparently 250kg under the rated load, I was very glad I was only going a mile or so... Wonder if I win a prize for most amount of lightboards fitted to a single trailer.

I lifted it on using my bike ramp with a engine hoist as a fall arrestor in case anything popped. Talk about capt'n sketchy.
I'd go with sparky's plant trailer though. much easier and safer. In fact I did for my mill.
To use a pallet truck safely with a lathe you'd have to build something to stop it sliding off the side. The bars egyptian style work much better, but because this was a mesh bed they weren't a option for this load, though I've used roller bars on previous occasions and to shift the machine round in situ.

Edit, to add, if you lift it with a hiab be very careful how you lift it. I have seen lathes picked up with a strop around the chuck and I certainly wouldn't want to pick my lathe up like that and risk brinnelled headstock bearings or worse.

Thanks for the replies yes was hoping someone local had access to 3.5 ton with hiab as at own end the alley leading to the garage is a bit uneven so the closer they can drop it to the garage the better just dont want to risk droping it as I imagine the damage is not pretty lol.

Good trailer, engine lift and a few bodies.
I should listen to my own advice. 600kg lathe went in my Convoy on a forklift in minutes. Took hours to get it out safely with no lift.

I did buy and collect within 11 hours. Not much prep time and a sleepless night worrying.

Yes forklift would make light work of it for shaw just dont fancy driving it four miles home from work lol.as for using a pallet truck I find the heaver the item you move is the quicker it skates off the forks .

Not if its solidly strapped to the pallet truck itself so it cant move.

I helped a mate move a S&B tool room lathe, about 700yds through town on a pallet truck. Total ball ache.

He then had to take it apart and cart it though the house, as he had no rear access.

Local builders merchants will have a hiab, and most likely on the rear.

As above, had a Colchester lathe and large Mill stored in my garage for my BIL, got the local independent Builders merchant to shift it to his place on their delivery wagon. It did cost £50 and took just over an hour but money well spent as they could drop them both on to the slab for his new workshop

ask around the banger racing circles, most of those guys have will have Hiabs. a 3.5T with a bed and hiab wouldn't be able to carry a load.

You would be better of going to bham wheels as a builders merchants would be tied by health and safety.

If that was me with my luck they would send 2 lorry's from 2 different depots, then have a lathe to move plus 3 bags of gravel.
