motorised bead roller help

Variable speed drill with reduction belts and a foot pedel connected by a bike cable to the trigger. There was a thread by one of our US members showing how his worked. Dead simple and worked fine. Drill was from one of the cheapo 'Big Box' shops, IIRR a slow speed one.

Rpm is almost meaningless without considering size of the dies... 2" dia = circumerference of ~ 6.3" while 3" dia = 9.4" circumference. At 100rpm (WAY, WAY too fast) that's a difference of ~ 26 feet in one minute* and over 50 feet of bead/min with 2" dies.

Given that die diameter is gonna be somewhere around 2 - 3" then max of 15rpm is plenty (that's nearly 12 feet/min with 3" dies) for simple straight stuff and, as you've one shot when bead rolling a part, too fast for accuracy- freehand small radius curves and/or hitting stop points accurately.

Get down somewhere near to 15rpm mechanically and less motor power will be needed than with a simple/cheap dimmer switch speed control that sap torque and make motors run hotter (less rpm = less cooling) although the latter is less of a deal for a bead roller considering the typical duty cycle

thanks for the info guys, ive made some 3"dies got the bead roller in bits bit of shimming trying to get it running smooth,ive just bought 60 to 1 reduction gearbox,i just hope the gearbox can handle the torque,im going to try connect the 1hp motor off the clarkes pillar drill, i would like to run 1/2" v belt with couple of alloy pulleys,the dies work real nice but trying to turn a big old handle at same time is messing my work up, doing my head in lol

Waay too complicated!
Use a stairlift motor, 24v but will run from 12v so you can power it with a car battery and charger if you can't source a 24v transformer and rectifier.
Has a built in reduction gearbox down to 12rpm, plenty fast enough.
Buy a 2.5 modulus spur gear from BearingBoys for a tenner and stick it on the gearbox motor shaft. (Assuming you have a Chinese deep throat bead roller). This meshes directly to the bead roller gears.
You can add speed control cheaply and easily and it's all low voltage.

Pics of my motorised bead roller.
Total cost was a £10 for the 2.5 modulus gear from Bearing Boys including postage.
Stairlift was on a friends scrap pile, motor, micro switches, transformer and triacs were salvaged from it.
Torque and speed control is amazing! It will put a 6mm step in 1.2mm steel in one pass!
Next mod is to drill and fit grease nipples and a spring to keep the upper shaft lifted.

Reinforced bead roller bolted to my English wheel.
I know the pic is upside down, struggling to upload pic from IPhone in the correct orientation. It keeps rotating the d**m picture!

Bracket welded on.

Motor as removed from stairlift (Stannah)

Fitted with correct modulus gear and bolted on.

hi that stair lift motor looks perfect,where could i get one,with out paying the earth,i just been looking at electric hoists 230v forward, rev it says they pull from 500kg to 900kg scaffold hoist,tom
