I built one a few years ago to start sidecars (wide tyres) Which I sold last year so no photos.
Started with 2 3" tubes about a foot long knurled in the lathe, turned up plugs to fit in the end which were attached to an 1" shaft with grub screws.
3" x 3" box with plummer blocks arranged so the rollers were about 10" apart.
So the driven roller would freewheel when the bike started we used a starter clutch from a Kawasaki (standard type 3 rollers in a tapered hole). The clutch was mounted inside the 6" pully on the shaft.
First we fitted a starter motor off a ford escort which possibly because the gearing was not right would not even start a moped!
then the light came on and we bought a honda engine from ebay - that did the trick!
We started allsorts of crazy inventions with it- Godden engined hillclimb bike, Aprillia 1000cc sidecar, Ducatis, 4 cylinder Japanese where very easy - never did manage to use it on my own and if a health and safety bod saw it they would have a fit!
Dont forget - there is no fun in sensible!
