So I'm after some luggage for my gsx, and looking very enviously at the gorgeous and roomy luggage that you get on those fancy BMW types, made out of brushed aluminium.
I'd like some top loading panniers (I've already got a top box sorted) which are secure enough to leave on the bike when it's parked, and roomy enough to store 2 sets of leathers.
I can't weld aluminium without getting a new argon only gas bottle, and the sheet needed for the panniers would set me back about 80 quid, which is a bit steep considering there's a fair chance I will muck it up at some point during the build.
So my other choice was some plastic (ex police bike) sort of things, but I think I might have to mount them quite far out to avoid the exhaust, because they tend to just be square boxes.
Now, onto the really crazy but quite tempting option - mild steel sheet. Yes I know I'm crazy, but I've got some 1.2mm sheet I picked up for a ridiculously low sum of money and it would be quite a fun project, plus I could make whatever dimensions I wanted to clear a pillions legs and the exhaust- the drawback obviously is the weight. Looks like large boxes would be about 20kg!! Good thing I'm not a weekend power ranger sort of rider.
I'm also not bothered about taking them off to wander around with them, just to store bits in when my partner and I go to events and don't want to wander around carrying most of a cows worth of leather with us.
I have ridden with my father on the back as pillion before who is about 30kg heavier than my partner and the bike was still chugging along amicably considering its a 600! I don't think we'd use it for motorway cruising or any serious touring, just for getting to localish events on a roads and that sort of thing.
Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts?
