Motorcycle chain splitter

Does anyone have a good chain splitting tool to recommend??

I need one to replace my cheap £7 eBay one that decided to break after a few years of use

Was looking at this one to future proof a further purchase

I always just grind the head off and push it through. Heard too many stories of the cheap ones breaking.

How often do you use it, you can buy nearly 13 cheap splitters for the price of that

Just went and looked for it, I thought it was made by Renold but the only writing on it is "Perry England".
I was given in the early 70s, it's had a new punch since then but it does exactly when it's meant to do.

Chain splitting is only half the story, you need a decent tool that can also crimp the new link over and a lot of the cheap ones make a mess of this procedure. A badly fitted soft link can not be discussed when your chain comes off at motorway speeds.

Whale are a very good brand of splitter. I have one and its nicely made, very heavy.

I use a DID KM500R chain riveter,
It is a good piece of kit.
Purchased in Helsinki of all places,
Having to replace a 3000 mile old chain, (fitted by the previous owner), on the wife's VTR1000, while touring Northern and Eastern Europe in 2010
But it was cheap, surprisingly, at £50, and £75 for the replacement, DID Chain
There are plenty of, exactly the same, cheaper variations,
Demon Tweaks do a couple, exactly the same at a good price, the Warrior Heavy Duty Chain Riveting Vice and Bike-It Heavy Duty Chain Vice
How good they perform I would not know

Especially chainsaw chains they are scary if they brake

If you're removing an old clapped-out chain that will not be re-used, then an angle grinder with slitting disc through the side plates of a link is the quickest option. I've used a cheap (less than £15) universal ebay splitter/rivetter to rivet/peen the chain, and it's done 2 or 3 chains and is still in good shape. To be honest it's the splitting chain links that tends to kill chain tools. Peening a soft link over is not that big a deal.

Bingo. Never had a failure, either in cam or drive chains.

I've been using mine for 20 + years , my bikes and the boys .
Mine was made in the USA , don't know if the new ones are .
