Went through a red light apparently and hit a car square on. It is interesting how the fork stem appeared to be the weakest link here.

Sheer force on the steering stem must have been pretty impressive.They are only relatively thin wall steel tube. The fork legs don’t appear to have bent at all, but seeing as they are ‘upside down’ forks I guess they are incredibly strong.

I think the weakest link was riding the bike. The back tyre looks well used.

For some reason it looks like his head bolt has sheared.

Off road tyres can wear like that with a lot of road riding, especially if you are prone to keeping it upright. Unless you are used to it, leaning on off road tyres feels scrabbly on the road.

it’s in Oz / NZ by the looks so dunno what the regs are re number plates but I didn’t see one.

forks on these are incredibly strong, ive bashed my ktm a few times on bad landings and it never ceases to amaze me how it puts up with the punishment.
other manufacturers too are very strong in the motox field.
however i have seen some that do break at the headstem right where the frame is welded, ive also seen them fracture where the swing arm is bolted to the frame the welds where the pivot is breaks out.

I wondered about a 640. Mrs 1979 had an LC4 640 and that looked the same. That’s definitely a katoom swingarm.

Right side drive chain, left side rear exhaust, twin exhaust manifold/pipes, lots of electrics at the headstock.
I don't think there are many modern-ish KTMs with right side drive chain,

It's also in Australia so who knows what bike it was!

It's an LC4 640, circa 1999-2004. The 620 had different, rounder side panels and longer split headers.

Bikes of that vintage can be difficult to identify (from the pieces) since many will end up being Frankenstein versions anyway.

Looks like late 90's early 2000's KTM 620/625/640 and from the black engine pre hi flow engine, those upside down forks are massively strong as is the headstock area on these, so would guess steering stem has sheared or more likely been ripped out of the yokes, regardless a definite nominee for the Darwin award!

The 640 had a different set of plastics and a shorter 2:1 header. I used to restore bikes as a full time hobby. Here's one I made earlier:
