I bought a used Portass PD5 lathe a while ago. It seems to have what I think is the original Brook Gryphon single phase motor. This won't start by itself. It will start if you power it up and then manually spin it in the correct direction. I have cleaned the contacts of the centrifugal switch, and I think it is working, but I can't actually see it working since (a) it is buried inside the motor, and (b) it is spinning fast when it ought to be disconnecting.
How do I prove to myself whether or not the centrifugal switch is working or not?
If it is, is there anything else (except for the winding being open circuit) that may be causing the problem?
How can I prove whether or not the winding is open circuit?
If it is, is there any possibility of mending it, or do I have to give up and replace the motor?
What does it cost to get a suitable motor to replace this? It is (according to its rating plate) 0.33HP, 1450 rpm.
Thank you - Rowan
