Motor tidy up - capacitor + wiring

Hello all,

I’ve got an old motor which I’ve been sorting out. Need help with 2 questions regarding the wiring which can be seen in pictures, please!

The old start capacitor has had it so I’ve got a new one, and the wiring to the motor was all but disintegrated.

The input power wires are marked as L and LE. There was a red cable going to LE and nothing on the other side to L (assumed would’ve been black).

1) I guess I should wire the live to LE and the neutral to L
2) Where does the earth go? What does LE mean, live earth? There is also an E stamped on the body where the wiring cover goes, but it seems like it would be hard to get an earth to.

Second, I replaced the start capacitor like for like with a 10uF run capacitor. This has new fly leads for positive / negative. On the wiring block the two leads on very left and right which aren’t connected (one has no insulation) are the ( I guess ) old capacitor wires. The frayed one connects to LE on the block.

1) Should I wire the positive of the capacitor to this side?

Not great with electrics so hopefully somebody can help and others can laugh

Earth needs to go to the body of the motor.

Definitely not in that terminal block!

The wires from the windings are they marked?

This may or may not be of help to you.

If it has three wires coming from the windings it's a permanent cap.

If four wires then it has an auxiliary winding but you say it's a 10uF cap so i think that's a run cap rather than a start cap.

If there are more wires then it has a centrifugal switch which operates when the motor comes up to speed.

They should be marked but aren't always.

might be marked with numbers which will tell you what is the main winding and what is the auxiliary winding.
1 will usually be the main winding.
2 the auxiliary.
Any other wires will be to the centrifugal switch which should be isolated from the windings. Check them with a meter set to continuity.

You can also check the resistance of the two windings once you've paired the ends up.

I'm pretty sure you'll find LE is for the neutral as that would be tied to earth back at the substation or in the meter box.

Thanks Brad, reading through that now. I took it apart again to get a better view of the setup which might help also.
