Motor rewind cost

Hello all,

does anyone have cause to get motors rewound on a regular basis and have costs gone through the roof lately.

I took a small (0.12Kw, 400v 3 phase) motor gearbox to a local rewinder and nearly fell through the floor when he said between £400 and £500. I was expecting about £120 to £150?

The Timber yard I do a lot of work at, says it's not worth rewinding motors, as new replacement units are far cheaper.

They have 3ph motors ranging from 1/2- 50HP+

I was quoted £400+ to get a single phase 1.5kw motor rewound - cheaper to buy a new one. The problem is the labour cost, at £40-£50 per hour £120 goes nowhere.

for just a motor, yes but as it's a motor gearbox unit I would expect a rewind to be cost effective, but not from this company?

Cobs, how long does it take to do, material costs are negligible and I would have thought no more than two hours work on the motor I'm talking about?

its probably a lot cheaper to buy a new one if its something standard and easily obtainable . if its a special your stuffed and have to pay the price and have it rewound, i just bought a 1/6 th hp twin shaft motor for a heating unit and that was 160 quid . trouble is now most are getting imported and are as cheap as chips

It's the law of diminishing returns

As other have said for many motors is cheaper to buy new, so the rewinders are left with the same cost base in terms of overheads and only the slightly odd ball motors to rewind. If they are to retain the skills of the rewinder, and it is quite a skill, then the profit margin has to be higher.

no the stator is removable, and I have contacted the manufacturer for a quote for a replacement.

It's just that it made no sense that a rewind is dearer than a complete motor gearbox unit, but I wondered if there had been a relatively large jump in rewind costs of late. I have had motors rewound in the past at reasonable costs

We had a 60kw motor rewound a few months back, that cost a few quid. Anything less than 7-8kw gets scrapped and replaced, it's more cost effective

I had a 0.75 kW 400v three phase motor rewound last year for £230, if it was a standard motor it would have been cheaper to replace but because it has a special shaft a new one was £400.

Hello Matt,

it's a Bauer Danfoss 90 degree motor gearbox, 22 rpm output.

Sparkplug, that's my point, in the past I've had stainless steel pump motors rewound as it was cheaper than buying a new pump outright, but it's the difference in price now to then that has surprised me.

It's probably a culmination of things. They may be down on workload too, so having to raise costs to try and keep turning over.

@piman - not sure how long it takes but stripping down a motor and rewinding by hand will be fairly labour intensive vs a machine wound new motor built on a production line in China. This is what the repair people are up against:

As others have said it can be cheaper to buy new even for quite large motors

haven't had one done In a while but they never was what you could call cheap, also if they are fiddly to do they stick a silly price on them and likewise if they don't want the job, get more quotes

I did consider that, but they are a bit thin on the ground in my area; in the meanwhile I found another suitable unit on E Bay.

an update, I have had a response from Bauer Danfoss, replacement stator quote of £130.00.

It does seem as the rewinder I contacted wasn't interested in the work.

some people are just idiots, they never think about repeat work from customers or reputation, just rip people off as and when they can

For sure. I guess the price Bauer DanFoss has quoted will be RRP or as near to, so as not to upset their dealers, so the initial company could have supplied a new stator* and made around £50 for a phone call. Clearly they can't be bothered.

I can't understand companies like that, we always advised customers old and new if we couldn't/didn't want to do something, and if we knew of another company that could supply. More often than not that generated other business from the original customer and in a few cases we have had the referred company passing work our way as well.

If your spleen needs milking I'd be inclined to call them up and vent it
