Actually I think that 3-wire tail is the incoming supply.
Funnily enough the thread I just started on reversing a gear motor, I learned that trick when I had to remove a traffic barrier and found that they had wired it up that way. Unfortunately 30rpm is miles too fast for your application.
Ah well, it's quite a small motor, a new (or secondhand) VFD won't be more than half an arm and leg
(EvilBay: item 112368985959 - I've had good results with Delta, and that's probably enough for your motor - easy to program and a manual written by someone who speaks English...)
They're not hard to set up for a simple application like yours, guessing you only need start/stop, forward/reverse and variable speed control?

Hey up dave... any chance you still have that vfd manual in arms reach... managed to scrape some pounds together and finally managed to get one of those vfds, fingers crossed the import tax doesn't pull my pants down and it arrives before father Christmas.Happens I would - I've even got the right manual for one of those Delta VFDs in arm's reach...
