Go for it, you only live once and you are a long time dead.
About ten years ago a woman in a Corsa thought it would be fun to try and kill me with her car, I'm pretty sure the wife paid her, she broke my back and lots of other bits, punctured a lung and done for my pancreas. A ten month stay in hospital and I now have to walk with sticks.
A few years ago I decided I was ready for another bike and because of my back the only one I could ride comfortably was a BMW GS1200R, I don't do the miles I used to but it is a fantastic bike and so easy to work on, get your parts from Motorworks, or James Sherlock, both of whom do second hand parts. And another plus for the GS is I have a huge top box to keep my fold up sticks in.
I should add that you really need to get yourself trained properly, join your local IAM group and train to pass your advanced motorcycle test, it will make you a better car driver too.
