MOT failure!

I've replaced rusty brake pipes.

Once the old pipe is off the vehicle, try bending a non rusty part to see what effort is required. Then hold it with a hand either side of the rusty part and see how little effort it takes before it snaps - without even bending.

That should be enough to convince anybody that a failure for a rusty pipe is not something to disregard.

99 percent of accidents on aeroplanes a seat belt wouldnt be of much help anyhow they would stop u lifting out of your seat and hitting your head on the ceiling if they hit a bad patch of air and loose a couple of thousand feet in a few seconds then recover

Hi, Yeah, I think they're for identification purposes because they keep you attached to your numbered seat so they know who you are.

I think generally one should be ashamed if your car fails MOT it should be maintained better for every day use by your family. Some testers come up with some rubbish though my Scooby got an advisory on its first ever MOT for some slight access play in the steering I still have it, never found the alleged fault and so never cured it no tester since has ever noted it as far as I am concerned he must have had the parts in stock or was just a fool. Its done another 100,000 miles plus from that test date Btw.

MOT is just a minimum annual safety check all said and done

Oh Kent that is a bit strong. You need to remember most people don't have the technical knowledge of what to look out for or the skills. It's easy for us on a forum where we are pretty handy with such things to pass judgement like that but for the vast majority of people they rely on garages for servicing and if they don't pick up the faults it lands on the MOT station to fail the car.

In certain things this is true but by saying every mot failure is something to be ashamed of is something I cannot agree with. My car failed on track rod end play. I've never noticed it while driving it's serviced every 10,000. What more can you do. Some stuff just genuinely fails through worsening without notice. No shame with that.

And some MOT testers are clowns, like the one who failed my 1976 Range Rover because the floor was bolted in with captive nuts and screws and had been since it left the factory, he insisted that it should be seam welded so failed it.

I have never had a car fail an MOT and am certainly not ashamed about this. The same garage put it as an advisory last year and the back seats have not been sat in since!

Light bulbs!! They can work in the morning and blow by the afternoon. It will still fail the mot and it's completely unavoidable

Hi, we used to get customers car in for MOT and service, the first thing we did was put it in for MOT. That would give us a work sheet, we would advise the owner of what was wrong and the cost to repair to get approval. There wasn't much point checking ourselves, and charging for it, only for the tester to do the same again. Plus it removed any doubts the customer might have we were generating work. If the vehicle was very rusty and an uneconomic repair it hadn't cost them a lot.

We should think ourselves lucky at the moment because there are proposals to bring MOT exempt vehicle ages inline with Road tax exempt ages. Because the new MOT standards are to be brought into line with EU standards, and vehicles from the 70s won't be able to meet them. In fact I have a couple of cars from that period and a lot of the current test is not applicable

There are a lot of anomalies in the present MOT. Like not being able to remove sideskirts or undertrays to check vehicle structure or steering/suspension components. Or the fitting of stretched tyres, a Construction & Use offence but not testable in the MOT. To name but two.

I think that is a bit of a daft thing to say, fair enough it is in such condition that it ought not to be on the road, but there are certain things such as brake pipes that pass over the fuel tank and cant be seen but have been known to burst under test, someone could have had a car serviced a week before MOT and the lambda packs up 2 days later how are they supposed to know ?. I recently did a car that went straight through test with an advisory of a slight bind on the n/s rear removed the bind and the wheel bearing was noisy, it should have failed , not everything is black and white

i like it when my vehicle goes for an mot. it means it gets checked over for safety every year. at least i can go flying around with full confidence knowing pars arent likely to fail on me that would have probably been worn and overlooked. it saves me looking

I think that reads worse than it meant, the word "generally" is inserted in the original post to cover things like the above. To what I am referring is dodgy breaks, worn tyres and bodge ups so the tester might not see the issue. I actually had the issue you mention just the other year

this sort of things occurs in all walks of life, common sense aint actually all that common

the trouble is if you took your car to 5 diffrent testers u may get diffrent results from them .getting tests done on wiring by nic eic inspectors once a year is the same ,some will pass things some wont and criticise and pick up on petty things who is right
