MOT Failure small weld

Hi,

My motorhome failed its MOT on a small area of the outside sill on the bottom of the pasengers door frame. I can upload pictures if it would help.

The area is about 25 cm from the Seat belt anchor point inside. It is a slit where the technician has stabbed it with a screwdriver I guess about 1-2cm in height and 10cm in length.

The sill is closed and you cannot access the inside of the sill from under the vehicle.

I have welded some patches on another vehicle and am happy to have a go at welding a plate over the area. The problem with that is that I cannot get to the inside as already said and I saw something that said you need to weld on both sides for an MOT.

Anyone have any thoughts?

A photo would help but a weld on both sides I am unsure about, would have thought a good weld with penetration would be suitable.

If you cant get to the inside then surely a tester can not see the inside.

Also thought they were not allowed to attack a vehicle with a screwdriver, perhaps I am too far in the past and things have changed.

You dont have to weld both sides for an MOT.

However it would be better to cut the patch to fit in a hole so you have butt welds & not lap welds. Looks slightly better too.

That's what I think also, isn't a small rubber mallet supposed to the the correct tool?

There is a special hammer for MOT testing which costs about £40 with a certificate. It is plastic headed with an aluminium shaft with a rounded point on the end and is supposed to be the only tool they attack the vehicle with. If you welded inside the sill how could they check it without cutting it open to see? Just seam weld it to an acceptable standard and it will be fine.

or... report to the ministry of transport inspectorate body for excessive destruction whilst under inspection if some oik at your local garage has gawn awol with a screwdriver on someones motor they should be stopped

Hi Many thanks for the assistance, I will have a go at a weld on there.

Respect the MOT centre so don't think there is too much to worry about.

Didn't know they were supposed to use a little hammer?

Perhaps they weren't meant to use a screwdriver. But would you prefer they found a little rust now for you to fix, or a gaping big hole in a few years time?

or even worse your car folding up like a pack of cards in an accident :because its rotten . tests are a good thing as u dont know
if theres any defects on your vehicle . it helps save your life and others as well prodd away

Campervan MOT welding

Hi,

The quality of the welding is pretty poor but it will pass an MOT fine.

Seems to me there's an awful lot of excess weld, maybe you would have got on better with a slightly higher power setting and faster travel speed.
It also looks like you were struggling to see where you were welding as the weld has wandered all over the place.

Same thoughts as Wozz! Perhaps more light and a reactive helmet would help.

They look a bit cold to me and inconsistent looking. I think you may have been too far away from the steel with the wire when welding it. Try going closer with higher wire speed, then with a good mask that self darkens, trust me they make a big difference when welding.
