Most complete round-bed I've ever seen

This popped up on my eBay feed. I have no interest in it but I reckon it's the most complete one you'd ever find. Full threading gearset (including metric), back-gear the lot.

I'm wondering what the red dial thing is below the gear train though - does anyone know?

It looks to be some sort of clutch arrangement to engage the lead screw when required.

How about a means of moving the banjo in and out to engage the tumblers?

From Lthes.co.uk - Because early headstock castings lacked the cast-in slot provided on later examples (that accepted a stud on which to run an extra changewheel to produce left-hand threads) the makers offered (at extra cost) a slotted bracket that bolted to the left-hand face of the headstock. This positioned the extra "reversing" changewheel in a rather distinctive fashion above the others.

Can't decide it thats fitted with a back gear or not. there doesn't appear to be a bull wheel at the chuck end

The lead screw passes through the centre of the bed and is engaged by the horizontal lever through a dog clutch.

Larger capacity for the same "weight", id say as well..

No bed twisting issues.

Setting tool height is a doddle (just move the saddle up or down).


I used to have a Drummond, and quite liked it. I much prefer the atlas I have now, but for small hobby stuff it wasn't bad if you were sensible with cutting depth. Certainly no worse than the my ford ml4 I had before the Drummond.

I had one, sold it for £80 up and running. The guy still has it and loves using it.

Probably for (dis)engaging the back gear. Only place for an arm/assembly for those is at the rear of the bed behind the headstock casting, so that's what the hodge podge bracket assembly and that wheel likely is.
