Mortice locks

My 30 odd year old door lock has finally given up so I would like to replace it like for like, but struggling to find one big enough.

It's 120mm high with a 70mm backset, most of the google hits are either smaller or sashlocks which I don't want, any suggestions please? (knowing the locksmith that fitted it, it would have been a branded make, Yale etc.)

Last time I needed the same I played the Google game, did the rounds of the DIY/tool stores getting blank looks, then went into an old school locksmiths and the guy took less than ten seconds to walk to his lock display and walk back with exactly what I needed. It was definitely worth the little extra it cost me.

can't you just pad out the hole with wood to accommodate a smaller lock like one of those fortress ones?

The union one on there would do, but at a price!, the one @8ob found is less than half the price, I have found a local locksmiths shop so will try them first

I like the suggestion above of passing out the existing mortice but have another suggestion:-
What's it look like inside? I've played around a little with mortice locks, changing leavers to match keys etc. I'm wondering if you could transplant a new mechanism into the lock box?

Your solution might depend on what the door does

If its a final entrance/exit door then most insurance companies will specify how many levers it should have as well as anti drill and other specifications and if you don't meet them its another wriggle point should you ever need to claim

Contact Nener's locksmiths , they are exceedingly good ..have helped me out many times . their range of locks etc is astounding & knowledgeable guys fantastic .

I have two of these, not used in the last 15 years, bought for my ex wifes mother, then She fitted upvc. Free forthe postage, if they will work for you.

the important part you need to understand is not the screw plate holes its the lock itself

measure the depth and height and also the thickness of the lock not all locks are the same

the other factor you need to consider is the keyhole

a 73-76mm depth lock can fit into a 70mm depth lock with some more chiseling and drilling out

height of the lock can be glued and filled so not really an issue there

there is also different thickness of locks so also be aware of this as yo may need to chisel out
