More vertical help needed

Hi all,

When im welding a vertical T fillet with a 2.5 mm rod i find the first pass the

hardest i think this is called the root pass, you can move the rod only 1mm

to each side approx, do i use the chritmas tree method for this root run or

just a weave . cheers ocean

Hi Buddy.it depends what exactly you are doing,ie thickness of plate,strength of joint required,what type of electrode etc.Xmas tree is easier if you are working on thick plate.With this method you are effectively putting two runs down at once,root run and second/capping run,but the heat can biuld up too easily on thinner plate and make life difficult.The other way is to put in your root run first by going straight up with no weave,deslag,grind weld flattish to avoid slag traps.Turn amps down a bit and go up with a weave(pausing at each side).Hope this helps,regards,Mick.
