More tig pipe welding

Hi folks, been working hard on my 316 intercooler hardpipes (dont have a machine capable of doing aluminium). Heres a start, by no means perfect, but a hell of alot better than earlier efforts, finding it easy to do flanges etc, but struggling to keep the consistency with pipe butt joints as I tend to let the cup slide a bit too much side to side, but happy with the results for 3 months occaisional tig! The other thing to note was I was kneeling down on a cold garage floor, broken the first rule - get comfy, I'm sure my steadiness will improve when I'm not a bitty off balance!

im hoping to do some some hard pipes for my car, i have a gt turbo track car with a front mount and a complex pipe system. im not happy with silicones as they expand alot at 25psi of boost and quite difficult to seal up. nice work there bostaph

Nice work for kneeling on floor. One point about first picture, I know you can clamp the work return to your workbench but you may have problems with a wooden one

Not if it`s made out of Persian Ironwood!

Get yourself in the dining room, nice comfy chair and steady table...you will see improvments just by doing that.

I don't think that being slapped, kicked or yelled at by swmbo when trying to lay a bead does any good to improve the welds...

Few more photo's from today - same pipe (turbo to intercooler) just about done but then ran out of gas, need to pay BOC a visit!

A couple more bits added onto the pipe with the 5 bar of gas I had left, gonna really have to leave it now, dont want to run out half way through a weld. Just about finished with this one then on to the next few!

Welds are getting better the more I do, quite happy!

Looking good, you seem to be on the right track, if you want to smarten your welds up a bit you can always run over them just with the torch, no filler, and use a slight weave and travel fairly quickly to blend the welds in

Thanks mate, thats actually what I did when building a mates exhaust system, looks damn good, but I'd prefer to get the welds spot on first time, just need more practice!

i know this is very old but you dont need to be adding filler wire to that. that way your going to get nice flat looking welds thats will be more then enough.

Thats a lot of work, why not use stainless bends ??? Also ditch the filler rod and use .6 stainless MIG wire, you will get much smaller beads.
