hi guys jus wanted to know what you thought of my welds im on a big co2 bottle and sealey 0.8 wire 1mm mild steel sheet i normally take 5 mins or so every time i come to weld to get warmed up. on the first 2 welds i got more penetration than on top! then after without changing any settings it seems ok is this because the metal is warm after a couple

Drew, There seems to be allot of crap in the weld,on pic one it looks to be slag, Is the wire definitely 0.8 wire and not 0.9mm gasless?
Also i see you've ground the surface of the sheet, what was it coated with and is it all off?

hi mate yes definately 0.8 wire sealey . the sheet was just primered from factory i ground only the side i was welding on ! i got the sheet from a mini restoration specialist ! onl 3 welds turned out like that the others more like pic 2 and 3! tell ya what tho using an auto dark hekmet is magic compared to the old clarke dark style

That looks odd. The first photo definitely looks like slag from gasless wire. The welds in the other photos also look very black. I'd expect them to look grey and metallic - more like the one in the background in photo 3.

Photo 1 shows good penetration as does photo 2 (obviously a bit too good towards the end) but 3 and 4 look very lacking in penetration with the welds sitting on top of the sheet.

in pic 1 you can see bits of the slag or whatever it turns out to be have popped off as it has cooled just like welding with electrodes
