Another stop gap solution, If caught needing a wheel key was to put the jaws of your stiltsons over the handwheel and pull sideways, Could save a long walk sometimes,

Only if it was a decent stilson, not the cheap rubbish you get now!

It allows you to calculate the wind direction from the non constant speed as it rotates.

Raymarine Rotavecta.

It measures wind speed and because of the extra bit on one of the cups causes it to speed up and slow down as it rotates it can work out the angle of the wind as well.

Does it work ? In a fashion, but you'll get far better data from the traditional wind sensor that has the cups and separate vane setup.
