It had to happen, looking at a local used car dealer online all of the cars had the mpg figures quoted.

Then I saw this

some time ago I read of putting magnets next to your fuel lines to gain extra MPG...

I dunno if that works or not, seems a bit far-fetched, but like these tablets I think I'd try it first without stating that it's a con.

They may actually work...

I'm the engineering manager in a paper mill, as you can imagine we are large consumers of energy.

Around 3 years ago the (now ex) engineering manager spent around £5K on a revolutionary new technology that used shaped magnets to reduce gas consumption on two very large gas burners...

Total fuel saving in three years = 0%

I'm sure that the literature promoting the technology was conclusive but as we all know advertising literature and reality don't always agree!

We tested the magnets in lab conditions when I worked for Thames Water. They do work.
The gas burners should have showed a saving if everything else was working properly, particularly the thermostats (depending on what you are heating). Typically we measured approx a 12% increase in the temperature of the burn, thus the water heated to temp quicker and the burner shut down sooner, so it used less gas. One of the mistakes people make is to recallibrate everything, which you don't need to do - the savings are simply a product of reduced cycle times due to more efficient burning of the fuel.

A few people on here (including myself) have also had good results using magnets for health reasons on animals.

I have no connection with any of the companies offering these products, but my own experiences have been positive.

I'm a simple Engineer, not a Scientist so am out of my depth here, but it appears to be something to do with alignment at a molecular level.

As a simple test, if you have one of the magnets available or can borrow one, try this (with suitable H&S procedures in place of course):

Take a disposable cigarette lighter and light it with the flame adjusted to maximum. With the lighter held down with it's base on a table or similar hold your free hand above the flame, as near to the flame as is comfortable without burning yourself. Get someone to move the magnet up against the side of the lighter, and I guarantee you will feel the heat increase instantly and you will have to move your hand away. Alternatively use an infra-red thermometer, but it's not as impressive just to see the temp change

Not exactly a scientific trial I know, but it does demonstrate that the fuel burns hotter when subjected to the magnetic force.

well, as I'm currently using about 60 litres of diesel a week, maybe fitting some magnets would show up an improvement or not within a short time?

So should I buy the proper kit or just get four small bar-magnets and strap them to the injector pipes with tie-straps?

Got me there. The blurb says 'rare earth' permanent magnets. I know some of the less expensive magnets out there loose there magnetism after a while, but these are supposedly guaranteed for life.

As I've just filled the fuel tank on the car, and I had a spare magnet kicking around I thought I'd strap it to the plastic fuel line between the filter and the injector pump.

It's a 'horse-shoe' magnet, about 2" cube and I have no idea what strength it is but it sticks to mild steel and doesn't fall off if I 'waft' it about.

The only reservation I have about this experiment is that I'd prefer to use a bar magnet as that way I'd know that one end was north, etc. With this magnet there's a north and south but the pipe runs through the middle, I don't know if that will affect the result, maybe it'd cancel out the affect?

But we'll know if it's made a difference in a week as I'd normally be refilling the car by next Monday and I can look for a better magnet over the next few days.

I've reset the trip-meter too.

I wouldn't imagine just any old magnet would have any effect but it'll be interesting to see what happens Peter.
As I've said before, I can vouch for Ecoflow stuff, my dog wore a collar when he developed arthritis and it transformed his life!
After we lost him we put the collar on our other lurcher and he's now 18+ and still lively so maybe it's the secret to eternal life too .

I remember these magnetic fuel savers being advertised in the exchange & mart in the 1970s, they didn't work then and probably don't work now, if there was anything in it I reckon car manufacturer's would be fitting them as part of the fuel system.

I recon we need to Calibrate your arm, to see how much waftiness you was generating before these results on fuel saving can be considered as conclusive

Hi,

what I'd like to try would be two bar magnets about 3" long, maybe 1/2" to 1" square section, strapped either side of the fuel line. They have a definate 'north' and 'south' and I could try them for a week with the two north poles adjacent and then with north to south.

But this is what I had available at the time so I'll try this first. I would have taken a photo last night but I'm on 'lates' this week, don't get home until 7.00pm, and it was very dark and raining last night. In fact it's been chucking it down for the last two evenings as I got home and I expect the same again tonight...

I check my fuel ecconomy from time to time, and I always use the same credit card to buy the fuel, so I know reasonably accurately how much I've used weekly and monthly over the last couple of years. I reckon around 10 -11 miles/litre...about 45 - 50 mpg.

I can squeeze that up to 62mpg if I ease back on accelleration and don't go much above 60mph.

I reckon that with car companies now spending over a billion pounds on developing and tooling up for the manufacture of a new model,that if a major improvement in economy/performance was possible simply by fitting a 50 pence magnet to the fuel line that it would most certainly be fitted as standard.

But that's just my opinion,I'm no scientist...

Heres a fuel saver that definately works, fit or make an oil catch tank
Before was struggling to get 32mpg now easy on 35/36mpg, whats that 10% for a one off outlay, cost me about £8 with a filter.

The way i figure is the engine is not fed burnt gases back in to the inlet which wont burn again! Not noticed any power increase worth mentioning but seems a little more responsive.

Need to be very careful on the electronic bypasses on modern engines, namely the resistors off ebay into the IAT. Basically it caused electric fan to power up when engine was cold and wouldnt shut off with keys in hand. Pulled the wiring loom apart, left 45 mins to reset ECU, took resistor out, voilla.

Those power boost valves are a gimmick as well, all they do is supply a higher pressure £70+. Easy job 10p of tube supplies 4bar if you know where to go!

Using a thinner decent engine oil will add performance and economy as does adding the molyslip.

Should make cars lighter instead of heavier as time goes on, its all the junk fitted as standard like air bags, EGR valves and sensors every where.

Well, maybe. But a catch tank which (eventually) vents directly to atmosphere should be an MOT failure.

well I've just refilled the tank...

460 miles on 50.14 litres = 9.14 miles per litre.

So no improvement and actually slightly worse than I'd expect. Strewth! I put the magnet on backwards! :-).

I looked at buying the correct item but at £50 it's a bit pricey to buy as an experiment. However I did note one advert on the web that stated it 'takes a week for the magnet to take full effect', or something close to that any way.

Seems a bit odd to me, the fuel goes through the pipe and most of it gets used up so how can that fuel have any affect on the fuel going through the pipe a week later?

Anyhow, I've reset the trip meter and I have a full tank again. It's not hurting to leave this magnet in place so I'll see what it does for another week.

I'd still like to get hold of a pair of strong bar magnets too as it only takes a few minutes to fit them and I'm doing the sort of mileage that would show results quickly if it was ever going to work...

this may be on-going for a while...
