Hi , the snag is the handles all diminish in size to suit chisel, but wil bear in mind for future jobs, is that a Vic Marc bowl lathe in your pic , mine is a home made job with a tailstock liberated from Grytviken South Georgia in 82,

On the tool rest, make marks with a pen. Then you can move in with a pint to mark the wood.
Then you can work from there.
I started making handles for MIS tools. You will soon learn to listen to the wood as it cuts.

They work you have shown is very good and it will get better.

What finish are you using?


Oh, warm the brass ferrules up before fitting. Making sure before you do, they are a sliding fit.
They grip better, those no glue needed.

Sanding sealer finish then wax , the ferrules are bits from old cable glands and are a tight press fit the wood is holly , sanded with 320 then 400 grit , the chuck is just a piece of hardwood drilled and tapped 1ins 8 tpi to fit the spindle then trued and taper hole to drive the blank , the chisels are all old cast steel bought in a job lot of tools , ,

If you get a smooth finish with the paper, jus wax applied. On a slow speed will bring them up a treat.

Those blades will take an edge very well. @slim_boy_fat sent me some old ones once. They are great.

Don't be tempted to use a grinder on them. Use an oil stone and a guide to bring the angles back. takes time. but will be worth it in the end.

Hi the chisels are treasured , the backs are mirror finish , when I sharpen I only back off on a flat plate with autosol chrome polish on, easily shave hairs on my arm ,

No I am lucky enough to have a VB36 with the long bed. 36" over the bed and up to 5`9" with the bed bars removed, very nice bit of kit smooth and powerful. Not me in the image but gives an idea of the capabilities.

Old chisels, Sorby and the like, take the best edge. Some of my new chisels, Marples etc just don't take an edge at all

Couple of my early handles, yes @slim_boy_fat they are.

Top one is a red wood handle.
Middle one, oak. The blade is cranked like that to allow it to do one job. In the Bird box's MIS run out.
Bottom one. Box wood. Turned to suit me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi , I built my lathe in 83 , been turning since 79 but never made multiples , a couple of pairs etc stair spindle copies but am to critical of my own work so if the project doesn't go right I dump it , that's the beauty of hobby work , no pressure ,

I have been turning wood for 4 years now, for fun and the crac of doing it in MIS.

What else did you liberate in "82. I got a hole.

A bench vice screw 30 mm dia with a big brass flanged nut, harpoon head and some pics ,had three patrols down south .Few other bits inc a disc from a whales backbone
If I could design a lathe and build it I would have a hollow headstock spindle , variable speed drive, a carriage like an engineering ,pattern makers lathe , the ability to turn true cylinders would be a boon , can get em pretty good by hand but truing with a traversing saddle would be ace , could never afford a lathe with those amenities ,
