Module that removes 40km from the vehicle's odometer

The last car I had was a 2004 A4 TDi. Owned it for over 6 years and it never failed the MOT on emissions and I never replaced any part of the exhaust.
Used to and from work every day, 6 and a bit miles each way so it was always plenty warmed up.
Now working a bit further afield so my annual mileage will be going up dramatically.
Might have to look at changing my current car though, I'm currently averaging around 28mpg if I drive it like a vicar.

I got that from the 2009 SV8 driven in Vicar Mode. I passed that on to youngest back in March with 220k on the (undoctored) odometer. On 6 mile run into Haverford I got 19-22 though!

At 6 miles each way that's crying out for a cheap electric car isn't it?

Now doing about 13 miles each way so using best part of a gallon a day.

Many cars will default to the highest reading no matter what, so you could fit an intrument cluster from a car with high miles and the system will set them all to the highest number.

Disco 2 does that, mileage is stored in instrument cluster and one of the BCU's/ECU's. If you change one or the other whichever is highest mileage wins

A friend had a Talbot Solara (remember them? ) in the 80's which had an odometer that each time it got to 39,999 it would click over to 39,000

I had a Solara, that's one fault it never suffered from..

when I got the car this gauge read about 35,000 miles, but there was a business card in the glovebox saying that the proper mileage was 55,000 miles. the business card has faded so I don't feel too guilty about doing this.

That's quite different from folk who alter the readings to trick garages/potential buyers though. No problem with what you're proposing.

Mate had a Jag he bought (before on line MOT's) with 60k on it, all was fine until a few years later he got to 99,999 - then a mile later he discovered that sometime before he got it the tracks for the 1 on the digital mileage display had been cut!, wiped almost the entire car's value overnight

People stealing cars like that are like foxes, they come every night waiting for the night you leave the door open. I know a chap had his Focus ST stolen recently, he has a farady bag and it was the the night he didn't put the keys in it.

I think my keyless entry is great, especially in the rain or if I've got lots of crud in my hands - just need one finger to yank on the handle and I'm in.
Ditto for keyless start - the key just stays in my pocket.

What happens if you drop it in a puddle while out on the hills killing the electrics?

Do they bother with hidden back up keyholes these days or do you have to drop your trousers and bend over for the main dealers

A friend of ours' son went out and started the car for her. She dropped him at school and went to work, She couldn't start the car when she tried to leave at the end of the day as he had the key. I know most cars have proximity detectors but this was on a new BMW.

Mate bought a "new to him" car...started giving it a good clean...fingerprints were on the inside of the glass for the odometer!

This was back in the day...consumer protection consisted of not buying a dodgy motor and if you did it was tough luck.

I also knew someone very heavily into ECU software and modification, he was writing the code so not just a bloke with a computer, he is very very skilled and works now for a race team. He told me that the biggest users of Mileage Correction Services were main dealers. Customers wanted to see a single digit mileage, like 4 or similar on their "new" car. Not the 180 miles that it had travelled up the M1 to their local dealer.

I went to pick up a new car and it had 125 miles on the clock, they tried the "delivery mileage" explanation, but when I pointed out the factory that built it was only 7 miles away they agreed to replace it.

About 10 years ago i went with a mate in Alan Day VW dealer in Muswell Hill- N. London, my mate was just starting as a cabbie after giving up on building sites (chippie by trade), he set his eyes on a vw sharan 2010 model, we went inside to ask for a test drive and got told its being prepared- cleaned and such ! It had 2000 miles on the clock and was sold as a approved used car with full dealer warranty ! I looked at the brakes, the tyres, interior looked a bit tatty with a few scratched panels and said to my mate no way that vehicle had 2k on the clock- did a hpi on it and it had 102k recorded mileage and if you were looking closely you could see the faint marks let by the minicab sticker on the rear tailgate window ! I told my mate to walk away- i was checking the car for him mechanically but e didnt listen as the dealer gave him a decent finance deal and trown in a set of floor mats to sweeten the deal !
A few years later he bought a new motor and transferred insurance to new cab. He advertised the above mentioned sharan and a pikey comes about to buy, he told him motor goosed as it smokes when floored- he gets out to check tailpipe and the irish gipsy drove off with the motor never to be seen again ! The car was still worth about 7-8 k at the time, e paid over 16 k at the time o purchase and of course he clocked it back as well to get more money...
