Try driving a Ford Thames 1500 cwt van in the 60's . If you felt really brave you drove up a steepish hill in the rain after dark. Talk about drive by wire it was more like drive by feel.

Yer Brussels in the back of a S Class and the driver thought I was going to be late for the EuroStar, obviously there were no speed cameras in the Brussels underpasses in those days. I did think about Princess Diana on occasions during that journey.

And she would have been okay if she'd not been too posh to wear a seatbelt.

The only guy to survive that crash, was the bloke in the front passenger seat, the one closest to the pillar impact - and he was wearing a seatbelt!

Why Ford kept on fitting them, to the point of fitting a vacuum pump to make them work consistently who knows. Its a long time ago, but from what I recall the fuel pump was a sort of double ended affair, fuel pump on one end & a vacuum pump on the other.

I never owned a Pop, Slim. The nearest I got was using the remains to build a Ford Special. It used all E93A running gear in a space frame chassis. Fitted a 100e engine with an Aquaplane head on it to give it a bit more go. Didn’t have wipers, didn’t need them as there was no screen. This would be in 1970.

I am fortunate to have a very extensive metal and woodworking workshop to spend my retirement hours in as I cannot bear to be indoors watching the c--p on TV I therefore spend a considerable amount of money on machinery and tools but what I have found is as good as modern machines are with digital readout E.T.C. the electronics part (for me) has always been the problem when there is one

They could be entertaining. I recall driving home in snow and coming across an accident. I just touched the [cable operated] brakes lightly and managed to squeeze past the scene...going backwards. She completed a 360 degrees and was stopped by the grass verge.

Trying to appear nonchalant, I got out and walked back to ask if everyone was OK and did they want a lift. Unsurprisingly, no-one took me up on the offer......

Happy days, they were.

ADAS on vehicles has been around for decades (parking sensors). Most recently it’s evolved into forward, rear and side cameras/radar.
The systems work really well generally with very few problems/glitches. However, they can be susceptible to interference from other radar either on other vehicles or when near airports.
More importantly; due to wear, component replacement/accident damage or wheel alignment the ADAS systems MUST be calibrated on a specialist jig or via a dynamic road test once initiated by diagnostic computer.
Anyone calibrating the system must legally be IMI trained and certified as it’s a safety system.
Sadly, there are too many people ‘in the trade’ who aren’t qualified that do work on the systems with little or no regard for the safety of other road users.
I know of body shops who use the cheapest mobile service for calibration. It’s conducted outside on uneven ground without the correct fuel load and tyre pressures are unchecked. A total recipe that’s doomed to fail. The system will now be unreliable (but it’s got a bit of paper that’s ‘been ticked/signed’ so must be OK!?)........ imagine a radar looking 1000m ahead. Incorrect fuel load and tyre pressure could have it looking 60m in the air well above the car’s on the road. Similarly it could be too low or pointing more to the left or right. Totally useless!!
I have forward facing radar for active cruise and front assist emergency braking on two of my vehicles. It’s been calibrated several times with wheel alignment etc (text book) and in the four years I’ve owned them, I’ve never had an issue. Totally reliable.

My 2017 V6 Amarok is very sure footed. However, it’s a 2.3 tonne 4x4 and you can’t defy physics! Tyre choice is key as is ‘carried speed’.


In short; tyre pressures, vehicle load, wheel alignment (all 4), body damage around radar sensor and calibration history will all be a contributing factor to the Assist systems functioning correctly.

What are/were those fitted to? There were some funny timed switched ones on my MGA that used a spring & vacuum piston system to cancel.

Not helped by the completely useless heating system that played no part in demisting the screen. I used to keep a potato in a plastic bag to do that. The road racing guys used to call them The Thames Hotel. If you had a Thames Van you were considered to be well sorted . Until the Tranny came along.

Aye, they were fun too. I had one [Willow Green] and was driving up here from home and caught up with the snowplough travelling slowly. I thought it'd take forever so pulled out and passed. Further up the road I discovered why, there was ice under the snow and I lost it, snaking up the road for a bit then shot backwards off the road. By pure good luck there was a farm road there and I shot up it - the amazed looks on the faces of the s/plough crew were a sight.....

I followed them carefully thereafter. Thinking about it, it's a wonder I'm still alive.

I have encountered them on S1 Bentley, probably the same Lucas switch. Nice to use.
