To answer the original question, being a moderator on a forum is as rtbcomp said a way for a member to give something back for all the benefit that they have gained from using the forum over the years.
From experience on another forum its a thankless job which can destroy your enjoyment of using the forum and take up all your free time as you are never really 'off duty' anymore, mainly as on the forum I moderate a minority of members there believe that a moderator should not participate, so we have to be careful as to what we post in case someone takes offence
These same members seem convinced that we are scamming money out of them somehow and that we are all nicely paid for our time
That said, it is rewarding knowing that you are helping to keep things running smoothly and hopefully making the forum a nicer place for everyone.
Hope this post makes some sort of sense

Its good to plant a seed of something that is a itch you suffer from yourself a little and watch it grow, with everyone contributing a little bit to make something better. Id imagine theres others done similar things and started up forums in a similar manner.
