Model Aircraft Servos

Does anyone know how powerful these are?

I'm wanting to build something that'll take the need out of zig-zagging welding ie the tip will rotate backwards and forwards automatically as I move the torch down/up the job.

I just need to know if the model servos have got a lot of oomph to cope,obiouvsly I would have to do some electronics in this but that ain't a problem for me.

Depending on what you are willing to spend you can get them with up to 20 kilo`s of lift
Have a look on some of the bigger hobby sights, though i cant see why a car wiper motor wouldnt work just as well and a lot cheaper

Size is an obstacle,Troppo and a car wiper motor will be heavy whilst holding the torch as the unit will fit into the torches purposely built housing

Look on someRC modeling sites mate, futaba etc and they will have a lit of all dimensions and weights plus the lifting weight of the servos

there are a few hi torque servos about.
you can probabley pick up a 10kg servo for about £30 - 50
have alook on the ripmax website they have quite a big selection

You can buy these fairly cheap now no need for that side of the headache,and will fit inside the welder wire compartment along with the PSU

Been scouring ebay for a cheap servo.

Servos better but if the crunh came to shove I have some printer steppers here,I might just go this route? these are fairly small and do have some oomph!

Without taking my torch apart,is the swan neck connected to power or is it just a feed stick housing for the wire?

what do you think about this moving about 2mm left and right in an arc motion? this is not much movement and I don't think it would cause any problem? but I'm asking the more advanced/pros for some idea on its movement.

Doh! course it does it carries the power from the welder.

RC servos use DC motors, not stepper motors.

You would have to generate the 1-2ms pulses to control them somehow (1ms left, 1.5ms center, 2ms right.)

I agree, RC servos are not stepper motors at all. They require a 1-2ms pulse, which is an absolute angle demand, every 20ms. This is easily done with a PIC or similar microcontroller.

They are available with quite beefy outputs. I used four as calliper actuators when I built a scaled down 4WD Traction Control test rig.

If I was selling a Mig welder that had the goose neck turning from left to right automatically,how many people would you think would be interested in buying it?

There is nothing wrong in adapting something that will make things easier providing it works without hampering its performance.

If my goose neck was moving left to right I'd ring it and stick it in the oven
Still to progress your queery what about inserting a thick spring between the tip and it's threaded hole. This will give you movement possibilty of the tip while still maintaining the electrical connection out to the tip. Then a small slow motor operating with an off set disc and pin, linking to the spring giving it the movement you are after. You would need to extend the shroud with maybe a length of plumbers coper tube. This will give you some where to mount the motor. Will try doing a sketch of what I mean when I get 5 mins. If i don't encourage you on this you will only go away sulking or blowing somthing up

Nah man,I have the bessy idea and its so simple...it requires a small bearing and two cogs and the motor,any electronics wii reside in the wire housing.

Gonna take me torch apart later to see how things are connected because I can only see exploded drawing diagrams on the net that are of no use

A welding environment is VERY electrically noisy. I can see you having all sorts of fun with the servo doing weird things as you weld. I have a Fanuc welding robot tucked away as a project for time to come, and all its electronics are especially hardened to cope with the nasty interferance caused by the welding.
