mobile welding work, small scale?

Absolutely none! no thefts, bangs, bumps, knocks, or offences. Its my age and manchester I guess...

I used to do what your planning. Not professionally. It started when my mate took his car for MOT and it failed on a little bit of welding. Garage was reluctant to do it but mate said I would do it but he didn't want to drive it without MOT. They said I could do it there. As soon as I'd finished, they (garage owner) said, "give us a price for that VW camper" and it just went from there! Other garages soon picked up on the fact there was someone who would do the dirty, time consuming welding work and I had some good work. Had to give it up as it was starting to get a bit much with having a 'proper job'. It didn't seem like anybody else was doing it, the garages always made money off me and always give me the space to do the work. Enjoyed it to be honest. I doubt there would be the amount of work out there these days. Cars don't seem to rot like they used to and as said, so many cheap cars out there now, it doesn't seem worth hanging on to a rotting one. Most of the work was up your way, Manchester, Eccles area) small back street garages.

Eccles will be full of work if you approach them, I have done quite a bit of work round there myself for the smaller garages. I too started off doing MOt repairs, I still advertise them as it was those small jobs that helped me get where I am now, never a job to small when bills need paying!

Speaking truthfully I started out with out any kind of insurance as cash was tight, naughty I know but you have to take risks to succeed. Not that I took risks with other people vehicles, that side was well and truly looked after, hence the repeat work I received.

I'm all for new ventures and love seeing people making something of themselves. I am moving into a more appropriate workshop soon and should a job come about where I may be too busy I will pm you and if you like you can come and give me a price?

Yes that would be nice indeed. Will this work be within your workshop, out of the rain and elements? As mentioned I'd need a good power supply, as all welder do

Thats the type of work originally I was looking for as a side line. As you say theres very few cars apart from the older ones that are rotting enough to need welding. Bring back steel body panels instead of plastic!

A lot of garages rather have the in and out jobs to keep turnover of customers high, and many of them have a small welder in the corner collecting dust.. A lot of mechanics don't like the welding part of the job either. (I'm just bonkers and would sit under a car and weld all day!)

Nothing worse than lying under a car getting showered in hot sparks, getting rust in your eyes etc.

Yep! I have to agree with that - I spent years and years doing just that, and I miss it like a toothache!

Bloody ell! £1200 for an old festa! I start driving in february, Got a car sorted too over the next few weeks, 1.6 pinto Capri!!!!!! =D £650 with 88k on the clock, T, F&TP for £1896 a year, Can't wait! Miles ebtter than the saxo/clio barryboys!

I do miss those days. And I agree, most mechanics don't want the troubleof all the prep work involved with welding. I remember when my mates car went back for the re-test, I was told the tester said "wow, we don't normally get welding done to this standard" which is why I got the work. I remember pulling a sill off a metro with my gloved hands. It had been welded by a mechanic. A monster slapping of underseal and it had gone for MOT. Thankfully it failed on the rear inner sill because the tester didn't notice the melted mig wire wasn't actually doing anything. It took longer to clean the black stuff off than to take the new sill off. A lot of the work was repeat stuff, patches that had been so called welded the year before. The standard of welding work I saw was really shocking. It seemed if it made sparks, it must be welding!

most capris had that engine which really wanst called a pinto engine, it aquired that name due to it being fitted in the ford pinto (America)
the saxo's / clio's will be better on fuel probably even quicker then your capri

Its a classic, though, done up nice will be definately a better view on they eyes than the usual humdrum modern models..

Theres a lad in the garage that actually does a throrough job of welding...to the point where the boss moans because he actually cuts out the surrounding 'good' metal from around the affected area before welding in a patch.. Boss's quote 'he turns a 2 inch hole into a 6 inch hole!'
