You need the second hand for putting the rod in so for me,pick up rod, 1/4 turn on holder with rod in hand, flick out stub, insert new and twist back

I can get on with whatever is on the machine tbh. It’s faster with both removal and engaging.
A good positive clamp type will easily let you bend the things too but tgere is a lot of rubbish ones that hardly hold the things. Mine grips so tight it embeds marks in the rods. It’s an awesome clamp.

the twisty ones burn out and wont grip 2.5 rods also if the rod spins round it can arc strike the job 2x arc srikes on a gas pipe and its a chopper spting tongs every time

and i nearly forgot. take out your tungsten and fit a 2.5 rod switch over to lift tig and voila watercooled tongs 2

I think it's true what a lot of people say a good quality rod holder either twist or crock style are good I've got a new tweeco crock style from the states holds rods firm got a expensive germen twist type holds rods lovely and is smooth on the twist. Also using a stinger v on my site stick welder that's a nice bit of kit also but will arc out if u go to hang it over something that the spring touches. The short of it is spend good money on a rod holder and it will last a good few years as on my inverter fusion welder got a second hand tweeco holder from the 90s was used day in day out by a pipewelder and I'm still using it today holds rods good still
Reminds me quite a few years back and as a newbie to eBay, I bought a cheap spring clamp, it looked good in the photo, it was the most useless piece of crap ever that arrived with the post, I never even went to the trouble of putting it on the cable.

Same here, 400amp murex tongs same shape as that. Only theyre blue.
The only time any different comes into play is spring loaded crocodile jaw type, 600amp murex with a small fibreglass disk just above the handle so it rests in the crook of your hand so you dont really have to grip it, that we use for welding huge long seams in heavy platework with 5 and 6mm 7024 and 7028's.
I started out with the supplied spring clamp type on my sealey air cooled buzz box. Didn't know any better until I acquired a screw clamp type that had been left behind by some pipe welders. After reading this thread I now know that it's a myking electrode holder! 
Anyway, I really like this one & it has been swapped over every time I change welders. Nice & compact but grips a rod very well & the rubber handle means you don't need a death grip to hold it.
It's currently fitted to my inverter but I might adapt the leads on my 180a Pickhill oil cooled to dinse connections so I can use the myking on it. The Pickhill has one of these fitted.
It is ok to use & it grips a rod very well but it feels very heavy & awkward after using a myking!
