What would be the recignised welding code for mma i can arc weld and have done it for a long time but now i reguire the codeing what would it cost to get coded and how long would it take cheers dave

Ocean, you could give Doosan Babcock Welding School a ring - they're in Tipton - 0121 530 5000. It's the best place to learn, and they'll do all your codings. I don't know what the cost is, but they will tell you i'm sure.
The codes by the way would normally be ASME IX or similar, specific to a process (eg MMA), and material, and would be on a size of plate or pipe which would make you coded to a range of plate or pipe. The codes are also specific to position, so if you're coded to 1G, that's downhand only. 6G codes you to all positions, within the size range, material and process type.
Codings are VERY specific. The advantage of having a good basic code is that employers will take you on and train re-code you for their specific needs (if you're good enough).

Its a broad question asking for prices depends on ability training neededand codeing type, As Simon says babcock's would be a good place to start.....
What makes you want a coding??? what in etc...... just curious its a bit of no brainer to get them unless you have a use, most firms will do a foot in the door test then code you to there spec......

Re coded welding
Thanks for all your help. its not for me but for my sisters son david who has been welding since 17 now 38.hes working for condor structures at the mo but he is taking his redundency. he is currently coded in mig but has done a lot of arc welding before but has never been coded. he is taking over a mobile welders job welding anything from forklift truck repairs to dock levelers.who is retiring but he needs to get coded in arc he has phoned the person that codes him in mig every year and he will code him in arc for £160 upside down any steel which is supposed to be as good as it gets in arc so i think he is going for that normaly it would cost £600 it dont seem like the best time to start on your own but i think he will have a go and i dont blame him because he will get to my age and have regrets and never now

Hiya might be inconvenient for you but here in London there is the College of North West London -tel 0208 208 5000 contact Dr.Dowling in Welding dept -they do all the coding - I think £160 will get you a very narrow/basic coding probably only good enough for heating/ventilation stuff ,for heavy structural 8mm they ask for BS287 EN /ASME 9 which is about £ 900 ,Try to talk to the "doc" he'll put you straight
