A recent experience with a Röhr inverter made me appreciate how technology has progressed since I bought my Topweld 140 some 40 years ago.
I am now wanting to buy a machine, but will avoid Röhr upon the basis that the one I used massively exaggerated its output, and only drew 10A from the mains when supposedly welding at 250A :-)
It seems that many machines are made in China, but I can live with that, as long as the stated output is accurate. I solely wish to stick weld, but would like to experiment with 7018 rods, which apparently may dictate a higher OCV. A 150-160A machine would probably meet my hobbyist needs but I’d be happy to shell out a bit more for 200A, just to be on top of the job.
I would appreciate any advice about which brands/models I should consider or avoid.
