Hey folks Decided to teach my self to weld and tidy up my trusty old tranny!
Its a mk5 190 lwb, Here she is!!

Made a start today need lots of filler etc lol, im still learning so comments good or bad appreciated.

Not meaning to sound harsh but I would have a lot of practice with some off cuts of steel first and when you can get a good strong run of weld tunr your attention to the transit.

Hi mate...good first effort, just need to get the tacks closer, slightly overlapping each other...what welder you using make model?

might need a bit more power too, the welds look like they are standing a little proud, could be wire speed, too much?

keep practising mate it'll pay off

p.s just noticed another of your posts regarding a welder, if it's a SIP handy mig, i doubt if it'll weld any better no matter how good you are...they really are a pig to get running right, probably due to them having no exclusive power supply for the wire feed, plus the flimsy wire feed unit...

i wouldn't bother doing any more with that welder...save up for a clarke or even a second hand semi commercial one...the reason i know is because i struggled for years with one...sold it & bought a decent welder best decision i ever made

Arceyed Thanks mate you got it bang on i turned the wire speed down and power up near the end of welding this lot up and it worked loads better, im planning to fill the welds in and tidy it up but got called inside oldest daughter needed picked up from school ill !. I Just painted it to stop rust .
I got a second hand clarke pro 90 from ebay seems to be a good machine.

You'll certainly get plenty of practice welding an old tranny!

it will be like painting the fourth bridge you have to start as soon as youve finished!!!!

You put an extra T on the front of rusty old Tranny Are you using old filing cabinets or Dexion shelves for metal ? They are heavy duty stuff.

Keep practiceing alot more,before you waste all that money you've spent on wings and arches

Its whats behind those that you'll have your work cut out

you can buy just about all parts for the tranny. wheel arches, steps, rear inner arches front wings, rear door repair pannels and more

I'd buy the parts over making them for that. Did the sills on one last year, guy said it was only a small 1/2" hole, by the time all the rest had been cleaned back it was almost 2ft long!

You will save more time if you get the panels and replace where you can. Not expensive either

I disagree, it's not like he's welding up some priceless 1950s Ferrari or something.
Welding off-cuts on the bench or on the floor is easy, wasteful and boring, at some point you've got to move onto the real thing and this is the perfect opportunity.

I've used a SIP HandyMIG for years and can do a decent enough job with it. I'm not saying it's the best welder but it's certainly up to the job.
