mk1 focus down on power but no codes /lights

our 1600 focus feels more sluggish than usual , pretty much like its fully loaded or the handbrake is on a bit , worse /more obvious at lower revs

starts and idles as normal , no funny noises or misfires , no dash lights on or fault codes on my basic scanner

not really up on modern cars , what should i be looking at ? all service items are up to date , i read coils fail on these but surley that would show a misfire?

take the plugs out for a start and compare the colour which should give an indication of how each cylinder is burning and possibly show if one isn't firing properly

Generally a reduction in power with no fault codes probably means the engine is feeling a little restricted. First thing Id do is whip out the air filter and see if that cures it. If it does, replace it.
Another culprit is the air filter sensor and lamda sensor. Both if they are playing up can mess up the fuel/air ratio making the car feel gutless. I would expect a light to come up though if it was one of those mind but on my old mark 3 vr6 the lamda Sensor did this to the power on mine with no warning but the code was still active as a fault.
Fuel filter perhaps if it's not been changed In a while can cause restrictions in the amount of petrol it can draw.
These are the simple serviceable things that probably wouldn't bring up a code but can defo cause the problem.

the thing with filters is it would be a very gradual loss of power and because of that you wouldn't notice as much, for instance it wouldn't have driven fine yesterday and badly today because of a filter unless you've been down a dirt road for an hour and sucked up a load of dust

its a 2004 last of the mk1.5 shape ...no doo dahs in the airbox or trunking

you could be right but same engine, just read up some focus's didn't have a maf

Is it a 1.6 petrol or a tdci. It might have a TMAP sensor inside the inlet manifold if it has no MAF sensor.

would i be mad throwing a coil on it...its over 100k and theyre known to cause bother , although not convinced as no obvious misfire

I wouldn't stick a coil on it with no misfires
