Just a point of curiosity really, I've thought a few times whether its practical to mix Argo shield from pure argon and a pub co2, no good if you use workshop quantities of course.

Argoshield is 3 gasses, Ar, CO2 and O2.
I do have a gas mixer. One of those $50 ebay deals. New they are something like $1,400 (over $1,700 with regulators.) I mix it 80/20 Ar/CO2. Smith sells 3-gas mixers for somewhere above $2k last i looked. Not something anyone out of a high production line would use.
I am tempted to get rid of it. I do mostly TIG and stick, maybe a few minutes of MIG a year. I may just use straight CO2 for MIG. The mixer has a slow leak in the internals. I know I'll lose any calibration if I take the complicated mixing reg apart.
I may just use two flowmeters: one on the argon; another on the CO2. Then set the argon reg to 8LPM and the CO2 one at 2 LPM and tee them together for 10LPM 80/20 mix. Both regulators will need to be set at the same pressure and may need check valves.
Not all the mixing is done at the lower pressure side of regulators. Max pressure is 50PSI so it is safe.
