Mixed petrol with diesel

Today by mistake my wife put a small amount of petrol, approx 1.3 ltr into the diesel tank of our car, after realising what she had done she promptly put 20 ltr of diesel in then filled the tank up to the top a short time later. The car is a 2.0 ltr Peugeot 307 HDI on a 03 plate. It seems to be running ok at the moment but what I want to know off some of you learned gents is what is the possibility of any long or short term damage and is there anything else that I can do beside draining the tank. Information from work seems to suggest that it should be ok due to the % of petrol to diesel after the fill up but what do you guys think. has anyone don the same thing and what did you do to rectify the problem. Thanks any info would be greatly appreciated.

A Small Amount Diluted So Much Should Not Be A Problem From My Experience With Works Van.

As above, it was a regular thing I did in winter in my landy (I know, not as refined as your car ) to stop the diesel looking like wallpaper paste. I kept a jerry can at home &usually put 5ltrs in everytime i filled up with diesel.

Ditto. Mercedes actually recommend it in the owners handbook of my old 307D.

I too am guilty of starting to pump petrol into the diesel engined Vito (108CDi ), I noticed after three or four litres, swore a couple of times then topped up the tank with another sixty litres of diesel. I must have ran that van for another two or three years with no engine trouble only changing to a newer van when the London LEZ came into effect.

in older diesels not an issue at all.

in theory can melt newer injectors/seals/pipe but in your case (maximum dilution) i would think you will be ok - too late to worry now anyway

My Mrs brimmed our 206hdi from empty with petrol. Drove about 5 miles then gave up and phoned me. "Car is running really rough" she said. "When did it start running rough?" asked me. "Just after I filled it with.........OH S**T" came the reply. Drained it, filled with diesel and was no different for the ordeal. Had it for about 4 years after that incident. Didn't need to buy any petrol for the lawnmower for ages!

there wont be as said a small amount wont make any odds wagons fuel up in winter and add gallons in the tank to stop the diesel waxing up and freezing i had a gallon in my van tank and just filled up to the top it wasnt even noticable

Many diesel tuning forums actually recommend adding petrol and or two-stroke oil it acts as a cleaner and lubricant. I always added 2 stroke oil to my ldv, made the engine a lot quieter and more responsive.

i've fed the exact same model of car petrol before. put a fair bit more petrol in it tho.

it didn't much like it at the time, it ideld a bit rough and chucked a bit of smoke out, but drove ok once it was boosting, so i drove it home ( 210 miles )

so toped the tank off and it ran much better, was a bit grumpy when started in the morning for the remander of that tank, but after that it went better than it ever had done before and was better on fuel.

i wouldn't worry about 1.3 liters of petrol i had a LOT more than that in there proably nearer 13

Done it with a works van put £15 in before I relished, just topped it up with diesel ad drove off, van is still going strong

Petrol in diesel

Hi, I had a 4x4 that had a little smoke, the mechanic told me to put 7/8 Ltrs. petrol and fill up with diesel, then drive HARD to the test centre (about 30 mls. away) passed the test no problem. Malcolm.
