quick story

Couple of years ago I popped out to get some more wire (running low). Left the then partner doing a service. while I am out a landy comes in that needed the usual patch near the rear door latch.

I come back to find the door open and my partner merrily grinding away, sparkes flying into the inside of the car.

I'm not overly impressed, no sheets around and personal possessions being showered. including a canvas bag. He hadn't bothered to clear out the inside of the vehicle. If he had have bothered looking instead of trying to make a quick couple of quid he might have noticed the bag was full of shot gun cartridges....

sometimes we do not see things in our rush..

not good filling sumones motor with hot sparks and crap but the shotgun cartriges wouldnt go off and do any damage .theres a wad between the main charge and the lead pellets one would just go off with a phut there only bad news when pressurised in a tube

dont think I will ever take the chance (phut or not) around any bags of ammo

Thanks for that, not got much to do with our exhaust system LOL, I'd be a bitty worried if your generating lots of sparks from tig welding though!

more a point about the way we sometimes get used to items being 'there' so forget to include them in our risk assessment. Not tried tig yet, but will do soon. Looks fun.

Cheers folks, yeah its heatwrap, kinda like fibreglass wool, its basically to aid in preventing the stainless from cracking under the extremes of temp and vibration, it stops it cooling down too quickly whilst stopping radiating heat damaging other parts to a certain extent. Keeping the heat withing the pipe also speeds up exhaust flow marginally, which is good as in the future theres gonna be a GT3076 going on!

I used to use a carbon impregnated exhaust wrap.
The idea being that the wrap would stiffen up after a few heat cycles which would stop it from falling off so easily.
Horrendously dusty though...

Whenever I wrap exhausts I use the glass wrap soak it in water first then when It dries it shrinks down and tightens up then I spray it whit high temp paint.

The carbon impreg stuff I used specifically said not to do that so you didn't wash the carbon out.

Wrap is only a performance benefit before and on the turbo though, only reduces heat radiation on the outlet pipe.

It does help with gas speed and under bonnet temperatures.
