Mitre cuts on 3mm angle iron

Hello,

Can anyone recommend a cheap way to get 45 degree cuts on angle iron?
I'm fitting a wood burning stove into our cottage and I'm making the register plate. I want to do a nice neat job so I'm making a frame out of angle iron then putting a plate over the frame.

I don't mind buying a mitre saw but as I won't use it too often it makes no sense for me to spend loads on a saw.

Get them to cut it to length with the mitre when you're buying it?

Buy a rage saw they are about £80-£100 and sounds like what you need, if you are wanting to buy a chopsaw and won't wanting to use it comercially.

For a one off job buying a saw is a waste of money, just mark them off with a mitre square, and cut them with a thin cutting disc on an angle grinder, even using a hacksaw it wouldn't take long to cut eight ends, this is the kind of thing we have to do on site all the time, nothing to it

If it’s only a few cuts (8?) why not just mark it out and cut it with an hacksaw - clean it up with an angle grinder and then file?

Dont forget you can clamp them up with a bit of a gap as long as they are square to each other and weld the gap up.
To check it is square measure the diagonals, if they are both the same it is square not a parralalothingy.

Or cut them squared off but with a rebate so that they fit together neatly into a corner.

Much more work & cuts than just mitring them by hand.

No need even for a mitre square, just measure the width of the angle, mark that from the end, and mark a line from the corner to the mark at the edge and you have 45.



When I do toe in angle frames, I cut the parts so I end up with an outside corner joint.
So if a wanted a 500 square frame, from 50 x 50 x 3, I would cut 4 bits at 494mm and mitre back a 47mm triangle.

In my experience cottage chimneys are seldom square, best make a cardboard template to fit the hole and work to that..

The traditional way we used was to mark out the sheet metal with the cardboard template, leaving an inch extra all round to turn down.

Then push it up into the flue, it won't fit due to uneven brickwork, but being thin the turned down lip can be dressed into place an fixed with clout nails into a mortar course. A slight bow upwards in the register plate makes it much more ridged.

Remember to make flue pipe hole first, this is marked out slightly undersized then dressed up to fit.

No need for an angle frame at all, hope this helps.

When I fitted ours, I made the plate slightly oversize and raked out a bit of the mortar so that it bedded into the actual chimney, then mortared it in. Cut the front of the plate an inch or so less in depth than the chimney so that it could be worked into place, then made a plate to bolt to the front of the plate to close the front inch or so gap. Not the best of photo's, but you can just about see what I mean:

all cut up ready to be welded. I ended up just using a mitre square and cutting it with an angle grinder with a really thin cutting disk.
I welded it up tonight after work and it actually fits the chimney
